Q: Connecting via static IP and straight-through cable under Bootcamp
The following is a bit complicated to describe, so please bear with me.
I run Windows 7 Pro under Bootcamp because I have some proprietary apps for maintaining Panasonic telephone systems. Until recently, I just used an old Windows box for this, but prefer my Mac, because it's much faster, lighter, etc. I had tested connections between my Mac and various Panasonic systems through a router and over the internet (allowing DHCP to give me an IP) and it worked fine. What I DIDN'T test was connection with a straight-through ethernet cable between the phone system and the Mac with the Mac set to a static address in the same subnet as the phone system's default address, which is how we connect when putting in a new system.
I was on a customer site this week and needed to connect to a new phone system, whose default address was 192.168.0.101. Using "Network and sharing" in WIndows7 on my Mac, I edited the ethernet adaptor to use a fixed address of 192.168.0.109, mask of 255.255.255.0. But, when I went to the software that manages the phone system database, it refused to connect.
I finally gave up and used my "just in case" old WIndows laptop, where, with the exact same settings and same cable, I was able to connect and get my work done.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?
Thanks.
