Q: no audio when compressor deals with compound clips from FCPX

Hey folks,

I ran into a weird problem and wonder if anyone can tell me why.

I have been building videos in FCPX and sending them to Compressor to make files for uploading to Vimeo.  It has worked well, but I learned a trick about using Compound Clips when wanting to apply transitions to a keyed sequence that simplified things a lot.  However when I did my usual Send to Compressor, there is no audio at all in any area of the Compound Clip.  I rarely check the preview, just let Compressor do it's job, but I played the final MOV before uploading and discovered the lack of audio.  I checked the preview in Compressor and sure enough, there is no audio in the Preview where I am looking at a compound clip.

Did I miss a step or forget to make a Compressor setting now that I have compound clips?  I have half a dozen projects in various states, and all have compound clips.

I did try Sharing to Master File and pushing that straight to Compressor.  The preview now has all the right audio and video so I have a workaround(?)  Is this how it's supposed to work?

Any guidance will be appreciated.

Thanks!  Ross

So far, I haven't been able to reproduce this.

In FCP, are you sending this from a project or from the compound clip's timeline?

    Hi Russ,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.  I'm not sure I know where I am sending to compressor from.  If I click the project in the browser the audio cuts out on the transition to the compound clip.  If I click in the Timeline area and send to Compressor, the audio cuts out at the same place.

Sharing to a Master file and pushing that to Compressor is working in that I get all the audio, and I did find a couple of notes on Creative Cow from other folks indicating the same solution to the same problem, but while it works, I may still be doing something wrong.

I am far from a Compressor expert and may be missing a step.  In the past I have simply clicked either the Project in the browser or clicked in the Timeline window and then done a Send to Compressor and everything came out fine.  The only new thing is the use of the compound clip.

If you would be so gracious as to explicitly advise the "right" way to send to Compressor, I will give that a try.

    Thanks kindly,
