Q: did OS X El Capitan v10.11.2 Update kill Mail for you after restart?

installed OS X El Capitan v10.11.2 Update. restarted. mail would pretend to start but hang up immediately & never go beyond spinning rainbow. had to force quit mail. tried three times, once after re-restarting. same behavior still. other apps start and run fine. can't access mail. not happy. no idea how to get out of this mess, either. any suggestions?

You have about 600 signatures. Is that what you expect to have?

Mail (El Capitan): Include signatures in messages

If you don't use signatures at all, this problem should be easy to solve. Otherwise, maybe not so easy.

i do have a bunch of "sig lines" left over from about OS IX or something, but have not been able to access them in 5 years or so. i would hate to lose them but since i don't use them, oh well. unless you mean some other kind of signatures.

Please back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Mail/V3/MailData/Signatures

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "Signatures" selected. Quit Mail if it's running. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item you moved. If possible, restore it from a backup that predates the problem.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Do any other devices synchronize with this iCloud account?

supposedly my phone does but i have never used any of that connectivity so we could blow it away just fine and start over if that is what you are thinking.

Please sign out of iCloud on the phone temporarily, then delete the signatures folder on the Mac again (if it came back), and test.

The problem is caused by corrupt data and/or a bug in iCloud Drive. As this is a potential data-loss situation and I don't have much experience with the service, I'm not comfortable making any other suggestions. What I do suggest is that you schedule a call from Apple Support by clicking the Support link at the top of this page. If you select "Apple ID" as the product you need help with, you may not be charged for the call. The first-tier support representative probably won't know how to solve the problem, so you have to be patient.
