Q: iTunes match is automatically downloading songs to phone

iTunes match is automatically downloading all songs to my iPhone once they have been matched/uploaded. I don't see any settings to stop this and only download specified tracks.  Any ideas?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.0.2

    In Settings > iTunes & App Store, do you have Automatic Downloads (Music) turned off?

    Yes, auto download music is OFF. If I'm not mistaken that setting should only concern purchased music - but just to see if it had any effect - I checked and disabled it. No effect.

    This might be a fix Re: Songs won't stop downloading to iPhone.

     

    I have two devices exhibiting this issue - an iPhone 6 and iPad Air. Following the directions above - I removed the iPad Air with iTunes from the list described under my account, then re-enabled iCloud Music Library on iPad and added a new album to iTunes - sure enough it showed up on the iPad as iTunes match streaming and not downloaded to iPad. So I tossed a few more albums into iTunes -  they also showed up on the iPad without downloading.

     

    Interesting to note - that doing this only for the iPad seems to have resolved the issue for my iPhone as well - new items are showing up on iPhone without downloading.

     

    Fingers crossed - so far so good with about 5 new albums dropped onto iTunes for Match.

    This is also affecting me, but im sure its also using my data allowance to download tracks even though this option is disabled. I subscribed to iTunes Match on Weds and on Friday I got a message from my phone service provider saying I has almost used my 2 gig limit. I never ever go anywhere near my limit. Then I noticed that my music library on my iphone 6s contained tracks and albums that I hadn't asked to download.

    I've disabled iCloud Music Library until there is a fix. Its actually cost me money because my phone company have charged me an extra £6.50 because I've gone over my 2Gb limit

    I Signed up to iTunes Match yesterday and encountered the same problem with my iPad. ITunes automatically used all my storage leaving 0 kilobytes free. After three seperate calls to Apple the only solution was to first turn off wifi on the iPad So that it would not fill up with downloading music as I deleted stuff. I then deleted various apps to get some free storage. Then I opened the Music app on the iPad and turned on the setting to have the iPad show only the downloaded music. That is done by a toggle switch accessed by touching on the title"Artists" on the top of the Music app library. I then deleted the downloads but did not remove the music from my library. once I had some free memory I did a backup of the iPad On my iMac. I then Restored the iPad to factory setting and reloaded the backup I had just made and reloaded the apps I had deleted. That convoluted process deleted all the downloaded music. I then added a new album to iTunes on my iMac and not surprisingly that album was automatically downloaded. I then deleted that download. I have a call back to the second level of Apple Support to see if there is a way to permanently stop automatic downloads to my iPad of music I add to iTunes on my iMac.

     

    I suspect but am not sure that it may have something to do with my numerous Playlists on iTunes as if I go to a Playlist thenclick on the "Edit Playlist" button at the top of the details of what is in the Playlist there is a box titled "Live Updating". Perhaps this feature has something to do with iMatch and causes the unwanted downloads. If I hear back from Apple, I will post what advice I am given.

    same issue here, the thing that really irks me is that I blew through my data with att! I had to upgrade my data limit just to accommodate until this gets figured out, it is costing me money!!

    Same problem. I have ceased using the Music app because Match keeps trying to push my 80Gb library into iPhone's tiny 16Gb storage. It doesn't matter that automatic downloads is turned off.

    THanks for the information about the automatic downloads which is ,I guess, what Live Updating does.

    Same here. My iPhone became unusable... had to reset and restore it. Lost one day to configure all again.

    Apple, please fix this or refund my iTunes match fee. I'm pretty angry...

    I have just contacted another senior advisor with Apple as my iPad continues to fill up with songs AUTOMATICALLY DOWNLOADED by iTunes Match. That advisor did a screen sharing session with me and I showed her this forum and, with the help of this forum's entries, was able to get her to understand the problem that I am having. She had me send screen shots which illustrate this problem and a PDF explaining the issue to Apple Support. She is herself escalating this issue to "Engineering" and hopes to be able to get back to me with 24 to 48 hours. when I hear more, I will post an update. in the mean time in the Settings for Music I have turned off "ICloud Music Drive" so that the automatic download will hopefully not occur!

    Just subscribed to match a couple of days ago in an effort to get all music on one database to be shared with 6 iOS devices and now my iOS devices are all but useless because I can't get the auto download to stop.  Very frustrating for wife, kids and subsequently me; is been tough to keep everyone in the Christmas spirit when the grinch stole their data and storage!

    TUrning off ICloud Music Drive unfortunately did not stop the automatic downloads. As soon as I connected my iPad to WIFI and opened Music on the iPad the torrent of downloads recommenced! Shutting off WIFI stopped it. By shutting the iPad off and restarting it, I was able to individually delete the downloads. It takes a couple of seconds to delete each download.

    I filed an official dev bug report with Apple last week, but never heard anything back.

     

    Has anyone else tried my "solution" listed in the post sbove? Re: iTunes match is automatically downloading songs to phone

     

    So far this is still working for me.
