Q: iOS 4.3.5 error 9 when updating to 9.0.2

Dear Mac Experts,

I've been having issues updating my cousin's old iPad 2 WiFi (MC979ZP) from 4.3.5 to 9.0.2. I keep having Error 9 whether I use DFU or any other method. Apart from that, Apple has also stopped signing all versions of Firmware prior to 9.0.2, therefore any older firmware is unusable (Error 3194 without fix even using System32). I was also trying firmware 8.4.1 and older firmware.

By the way, I've tried many different original cables and many different computers, both Mac and Windows, including the garbage bin.

According to Apple's HQ, this could be an "Untested Issue with latest iTunes and iOS9 having a negative effect on very old versions of iOS being upgraded to iOS9".

I'm writing here to seek help from you, if there is any other solution to this issue, and also to hopefully notify Apple's Support on this issue and hope they will fix it on their next version of iTunes.

Warmest Regards,

Mak ********

Anyome that is having this problem please contact Apple support no matter if you have Apple care or not. 1-800-275-2273   The more we call hopefully the faster this gets fixed.  Due to low customer impact this problem has just come to light. Call support and give them your s/n and problem.  And they will ask if you want to send in and say no you would like to see a future iOS update to fix problem.  I was told Apple rarely reads these posts. So call call call.

Same old story here. Went through all steps (new cable, several different computers with updated iTunes, no security software or firewall turned on, Mac and PC, used regular iTunes and Apple Configurator), cannot get iPad2 with 4.3.5 to update iOS giving error 9. Contacted an Apple Engineer and he told me to call AppleCare whether it was under warranty or not. The more they hear the story, the better chance a fix will get pushed for future iOS updates.

I'm as frustrated as the other 107 posts here. But there is no current fix for the problem. I do appreciate the diligence of the other posters as this thread guided me through all steps taken so far. This thread has given more information than any other on the net about this particular problem. As I find out any more info I will post.

Exact. Same. Problem.   Same iPad and iOS number. I'm hopeful for a solution and I hope it receives a fix soon, but this apple we're talking about. I can't honestly see another solution than this being suggested by apple.  Apple: "Ya gotta buy a new iPad!"  Like I said, I want a fix to this as much as everyone else, and correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't it been months since this problem started? I feel like us "customers" are just being left out to dry...

Please Apple can you address this..?

I have experienced the same rollercoaster of difficulties and don't want my IPad 2 to become a paperweight.

Step by step I have followed the instructions offered in this thread to no avail - days of frustration....

Please, please offer us an iTunes update whigh can resolve the issue...

Agree, it's silly that there is nothing to do on our end here and no resolution in sight for an update!

I purchased this used so I had no choice for updating, was greatly disappointed to find I might have to resell if I can't update the iOS, because what would be the point of this ipad except internet browsing? I don't understand why Apple can't authorize an update from 4.3.3 to the most currently supported iOS, especially considering they stop offering support for the earlier iOS versions.

They essentially are using their own software to build in an artificial end-date for hardware that is still fully functional.

I guess we are lucky at this college. I was handed 4 iPad2s that had not been managed. The first 2 were at iOS4.3.5 and having tried many times to update, the first failed with error 9 as everyone is experiencing. That brought me to this thread.

I had to use the iPhoneCarePro - purchased version of iReboot, to get one out of restore mode. The other two iPads were at 6.1.3 and these successfully updated to iOS 9.2.

Clearly there must have been an update on the iPad itself between iOS4.3 and iOS6.1 which made a change to the update process and now prevents the latest updates from going onto the iPad?

I found the iPadUpdater log for the latest update attempt:

    Under   <Username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPad Updater Logs

Here is the last section of the log - some people enjoy this techie stuff.......... But to those who don't, the Bold text may be remotely interesting!

[14:33:09.0436]    Depth:1 Error:The operation couldn’t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 9 - Failed to receive message from device)

I can see why they say about cables and anti-virus issues from the lines I have highlighted saying the device was disconnected.

The device either rejects the latest version of iOS or the message it passes back to iTunes is not accepted to allow the update to continue.

I tried one last time with an online chat to Apple Support. Whilst he was very helpful, I can't see any progress happening on this issue.

They recommend the iPad needs to be repaired. But I don't think anyone is going to pay for a repair - might as well spend the money on a new iPad!!

Not good news for individuals or those with large numbers of iPads in this position.

I'm sure there must be a way of Apple releasing a software program to replicate the update that must have happened between iOS4.3 and iOS6, but there doesn't seem to be a way of getting this request through to them.

I called the 800 Apple number above and was told the only way to update from 4.3.5 (which I have on my IPAD 2) was to update IOS 9.2 ONLY from iTunes which it has to be the latest version and to use a PC or Mac that has been rebooted fresh. Use known good 30 pin cable. I did this and it WORKED ! My IPAD 2 now has IOS 9.2 and works great...... I went straight from 4.3.5 to 9.2 ! According to Apple this is the only recommended way to avoid errors that I have been reading here....You do not want to update from the IPAD2 directly.

Thanks for sharing this, but I have tried exactly what you say - reinstalled latest iTunes with iOS 9.2 - reboot PC and ....... same old problem - error 9 - it is beginning to feel like ground hog day..

...any further suggestions?? maybe I am missing something - maybe Apple could put out a patch in the next ITunes ?!??
