Q: I can't find Windows-bootcamp after installing El Capitan

After upgrading my Mac from OS-X LION system to El Capitan I am unable to find bootcamp when I turn on my computer and press the option key; and also when I check the disk partition the former bootcamp partition appears as untitled

The tool is an unmitigated disaster and is responsible for most of the miseries for Mac BC/Windows users. It manipulates only the MBR and leaves the GPT unmodified. a new OSX upgrade uses the live header of the original partition and this is who you end up in the mess you have. Apple does not support re-sizing Windows on a Mac, precisely because of this reason. What is the current Testdisk status?

From Boot Camp: Resize the Windows partition

Warning: Do not use other apps or Windows to resize your partitions. If you do so, you could potentially damage your computer and prevent it from starting up.

    Hi Loner,

I had to reinstall windows again so I lost all my data and media.

This time I have an external HardDrive and I had created a System Image Backup using Windows Backup.

I wonder if you can answer my question about Windows system recovery on bootcamp:

Let's say I get a virus and I decide to delete the bootcamp partition. Then I proceed to reinstall windows7 normally using Boot Camp assist losing all my files and programs I had before. After the installation is done I want to recover all the files, settings and programs that I had before. So I connect my harddrive and use System Image restore through control panel, not through an Installation Disc.

My logic is if I do it through a Windows installation or recovery disc before windows is properly installed with bootcamp that might reformat the entire hard drive and I would lose the Mac partition, which is obviously not an option. But if I do it after properly installing windows through bootcamp and go to control panel to do the System Image recovery that will only touch the Bootcamp/Windows partition and not affect the entire hard drive.

Is my logic correct? or simply a Windows System Image recovery on a Mac is not possible?

    Thanks!

Your logic is correct. Windows Image Recovery is too simplistic and wants to reformat the entire drive when used in offline recovery, which should be avoided.

    Alright,

And what about if I do the Windows Image recovery through control panel?

After windows is properly installed in bootcamp

Would I be able to recover previous files, settings and programs without affecting the Mac partition?

    Thanks Loner

The main challenge is the sizing of partitions. The System Image and the new BC/Windows installation should be close in size. You may need to use something like GParted to correct the sizes. You should not restore the System Image to a smaller installation.

Should be close in size, alright

What if the System Image recovery is 80GB and my bootcamp partition is 500GB?

In that case could I proceed with the System image recovery?

Yes, that will work. Use GParted after the restore to adjust size.

    Alright!

I hope I would never have to go through a System recovery. But I have to be prepared, after losing all my files and media already.

    Thanks Loner!!
