Q: Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac.  Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app.  Frozen while they are loading.  They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Do you have the Apple legacy Java runtime installed?  It could be that it's an older, unsigned version.  Try downloading and installing it from here: Java for OS X 2015-001

Thanks, OT; I downloaded and installed, but EtreCheck report did not change. So I booted from external HD and removed the culprit from System/Library/LaunchAgents. It is a plist file, so it should be recreated if needed. Any way, now EtreCheck gives a clean bill, and CS5 still appears to be working normally. Could have been something else, but Java-related.

OT, am wondering if you can help me as well. Same problem. I have a pretty brand new Imac, (two months old), I've been sitting here for 20 minutes waiting for the photos I took with my brand new Iphone 6s to appear on my Imac in Photos app, (which I hate compared to iphoto) it sent two out of 8 then stopped.

    Thank you!

Start your own topic and give the details of your setup, which iCloud feature you're using, the Etrecheck report, what fixes you're tired, where your library is located, etc.  Getting tagged onto the end of this 10 page topic makes it difficult to get to the specifics of your problem.

Time since boot: about 5 days

You should reboot more frequently in order to clear out the temporary and swap files that accumulate.

Here's the primary reason for your problems, CleanMyMac2.  it's considered malware around here.  Uninstall it according ago the developer's instructions.  You can Google "uninstall cleanmymac" to get the instructions. The rerun Etrecheck to see if you got them all.

You can also check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

    1 - Name contains cleanmymac

    2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Can you help with this one please. The Mac works, but gets very slow, particularly if you try to copy and paste stuff, but also randomly. I guess disk failure is not a great thing .

FYI, this is also a forum to vent and express frustration with Apple's products.  I was not asking for help, I was providing feedback.

Feedback is welcome in these forums, but look again at the Terms of Use - the link is on every forum page:

Apple Support Communities Terms of Use

Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Constructive feedback about product features is welcome as well. If your Submission contains the phrase "I'm sorry for the rant, but…" you are likely in violation of this policy.

First and foremost it appears that your hard drive if failing:

Disk Information: (What does this mean?)

       ST3320820AS_Q disk0 : (320.07 GB) (Rotational)

           EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB

           Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 319.08 GB (71.04 GB free) - 182 errors

    Drive failure!

So you need to backup the entire hard drive ASAP and then make an appointment at the nearest Genius Bar for a free diagnostic of your Mac.

Secondly, you've installed what many around here consider malware, CleanMyMac3.

User Login Items: (What does this mean?)

       CleanMyMac 3 Menu   Application (/Applications/CleanMyMac 4.app/Contents/MacOS/CleanMyMac 3 Menu.app)

I suggest you first uninstall CleanMyMac3 according to the developers instructions:

How to Uninstall CleanMyMac 3. Knowledge Base - MacPaw

How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of ...

Then reboot and start making that backup of your hard drive.

Once you've backed up the hard drive you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select disk utility and repair the disk.  If you get a message that errors have been found and fixed, repeat the repair until there's not message.  Reboot normally and rerun Etrecheck to see what it reports about the disk.

MAny thanks. I already have a backup, as I use Time Machine for the whole Mac anyway. All my important data is on icloud or dropbox as well.

THe Clean my Mac thing has been removed now. Only installed it today, ran as a test, but it didnt do anything. Didnt Think it was worth the money. Thanks for the heads up. The slow problem happened well before the installation.

I spoke to Apple support at length and they said buy a new Mac!
