Q: My iTunes library

My iTunes library has all been transferred from iMac to my iPhone 6 and my iPad Pro.  Problem is that on the iPhone, a vast majority of the music is greyed out and unavailable for me to enjoy.  The same library is available on my iPad Pro. Both devices are running iOS 9.2. The only apparent difference is that I used the iPhone with the the Apple music membership on a trial basis that has since expired and was not renewed. The music in question is mixture of music collected from cd's and other sources. Also, I see many "duplicate" entries of playlists that, if I could listen to them, have the exact same songs.  Hopefully, this is merely an issue of operator ignorance and error.

    Hello spalding11,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that after you decided to not continue with your Apple Music subscription, that you're now seeing grayed out music in your iPhone.  This indicates that the music you're seeing grayed out, has been saved as a part of your Apple Music subscription.  Since it has expired, please make sure to have the option enabled to view "Only Downloaded Music" as shown below.

To see music that you downloaded to listen to offline, go to My Music. Under the Recently Added section, tap the category selector (Artists, Albums, etc.). Only Downloaded Music is at the bottom of the category list. When this setting is on, My Music shows only songs that you downloaded to your device.

    Using the new Music app

    Cheers.

TThank you for the info.  If I understand you correctly, I must subscribe to Apple Music to listen to music even if it existed in my library prior to Apple Music?  Here is another part of the riddle: all of my music is available on my iPad pro operating on the same iOS and downloaded from the same Mac?!  Perhaps when I had the trial subscription to Apple Music I set up something wrong?  Seems odd that I would be forced to subscribe to a service to enjoy something I enjoyed previously for free.
