Q: Battery trouble with MacBook Pro (mid-2012, 13").

Computer does not run without charger (light is green). There is an X in the battery icon, but "Condition: Normal" displays. Below that - "No Battery Available" is in light grey. Under System Information, no cycle information will display at all at Hardware>Power. However, when I checked it a few weeks ago (before the X appeared in the top bar) it read something like 526 cycles. This is when the computer first stopped working without the charger plugged in. Why don't you post every thing like this:

Make certain that the charger is connected.

Also run am Apple Hardware test:

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

    Ciao.

What does the battery "Health Information:" like "Cycle Count"  and "Condition" say?

You can see that info under "Battery Information", the category posted above "System Power Settings".

    Reset SMC.

    Choose the  appropriate method.

None of what you show , OGLETHORPE, on your screen shot shows up when I go to Hardware>Power. What you see on my post is what I got - nothing more. No "Battery Information" comes up. And yes, my charger is plugged in (otherwise, this computer would not be on at all). I will try the AHT. I did an SMC reset recently - but I might not have used the proper protocol. I will check further.

    Thank you for trying...

To be clear, none of what I have boxed in appears on your  System Information>Power  display:

    That is most unusual.

    Ciao.

Yes, my sentiments, exactly. However, that information was available several weeks ago when I was checking into why my computer would not operate without the charger. And,at that time it appeared there were plenty of cycles left (I think it was around 528). Also, at that time - there was no "X" in the battery icon. Then, the X appeared and the other information from "Hardware>Power" disappeared.

Have not been to Genius Bar yet, or run the AHT. Hope to do the latter before days end.

    Thanks, again.

    AHT: "No trouble found"

    Under Power Details:

    Power source: Adapter

    Voltage 12.25 V

    Capacity 0%

    Two weeks later...

All of a sudden, this morning, while use my Mac (plugged in, of course) the battery icon shows the lightning bolt symbol with the % showing at 89% charged. The X in the icon also disappeared and the green light on the charger turned to orange. Now, I can check System Information again for Battery Information and AC Charger Information (see below) which had completely disappeared from System Information when the X appeared in the battery icon. What the heck?? Note: this happened after I reached for something - possibly jolting the charger at the input to the Mac. Maybe something is mechanically "off" in there??

After I send this email, I will try to unplug and see what happens.

Thanks for any ideas about what is going on.

    Hello again.

Will wonders never cease? I unplugged after I sent you that Reply a few minutes ago and the computer did not blank out. I am now suspicious that there is something funky with the input for the charger. This is the first time in more than a month that I have been able to use the Mac without being plugged in.

I still haven't visited Genius Bar. Should I just thank my lucky stars or should I still visit. Maybe time to replace the Mac (now 3+ years). I'm always on a tight budget, but I don't want to push this too far and then have to replace it unexpectedly - but maybe that is the prudent thing to do.

    Thanks again.

Do make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  Mac are not known to have self healing properties.  I would speculate that there is something loose in the interior, perhaps with the DC input board.  If it suddenly has 'risen from the dead', it can just as easily die again.

    Ciao.
