Q: Problems with Performance (kernel_task), Locking Up, Crashes in Diagnostic Reports, more

Hi, for the last several months I've been scouring the boards for help on a number of issues.  Wondering if someone can help me.

The issues that I've seen are:

- Lots of crash reports in DiagnosticReports on console

- Spike in memory usage of kernel_task

- Video or Flash freezes safari when watching videos

- Fan will run constantly and computer gets very hot in the area above the keyboard on the left side mostly

- System performance heavily bogging down, apparently due to these factors

- Computer will crash and when I restart I get a grey screen with relish lines across it. It will never start unless I reboot and use the internet recovery tool.

Below is an EtreCheck report that I ran about an hour ago after I got the computer restarted.  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks for the reply Ginger and MadMacs0.

I do not use any kind of VPN nor do i see the need to use one in the future. Are they safe to remove? If so do I just throw the plist file in the trash or is there something else I need to do to correctly uninstall these?

It's safe to remove them, but since we don't know what VPN software you previously installed, there is no way to determine if and what else needs to be uninstalled.

    MadMacs0 wrote

Does Afloat mean anything to you?  https://github.com/millenomi

Doesn't mean a thing to me... safe to remove that as above?

So none of those items listed in the link ring a bell?  There is certainly other evidence that you have software designed to access or run Windows software.

Also take a look in ~/Library/Applications Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ to see what you might have installed that needs SIMBL. The tilda "~" is shorthand for your Home folder=/Users/<yourusername>. Hopefully you already know that you normally need to hold down the <Option>-key and select Library from the Finder's Go menu to access this hidden folder.

Some additional comments about your Internet Plug-Ins that are probably not related to your issues.

    Flash Player was updated yesterday.

Silverlight is months, maybe years out-of-date. Current is v5.1.41105.0.

QuckTime Plugin will be disabled once you update to OS X 10.11.2. Detatils at If your web browser says that it's missing the QuickTime plug-in - Apple Support.

Java has been update to 8U66.

Also check System Preferences->FUSE for OS X to make sure it's up to v1.8.2

Disregard my comment about Flash Player as I see you did get the update already.

I removed the tap/tun stuff and looked for any evidence of VPN software, but not really sure what I would be looking for other than something I don't recognize. Didn't see anything that i don't recognize.

None of the Afloat stuff rings a bell... the only thing I may have had that accessed or ran windows software was silverlight and mbox when I used to use hotmail within apple mail. I do have Mac version of Microsoft Windows, but don't think that would be it.

There is the SIMBL folder in the ~/Library/Applications Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ but there is nothing in there... SIMBL is just an empty folder, in fact it won't even let me delete it.

    Flash player - good, thanks!

Silverlight - I removed it since I used to use it with hotmail on apple mail, but no need for it now.

Quicktime - Thanks for the heads up!

Java - Updated to 8U66, I have Java set to run weekly and run update, but just missed the last on for some reason.

Fuse - got rid of it too.

So far no crashing or hanging issues since I started this thread and all the maintenance and cleaning of my machine. (knock on wood)

Thanks for all the help, here is hoping that something that I did along the way was the cure!

Well, I hoped that it was cured, but cam home today from work to a computer that wasn't working correctly. One of my kids was playing Minecraft when apparently the screen went black and the computer would not respond. After I came home, I opened it hoping to wake it from sleep but it never work, the fan was spinning and the computer was hot to touch. Nothing would awake the computer except holding down the power to shut it down. Upon restarting it, as usual, the grey apple screen came up with red horizontal lines across it and the progress bar went about halfway up and it stopped there. I powered down after several minutes and had to do the internet recovery (OPT/CMD/R) to get it working again.

Opened console and it looks like this is about where it happened (4:38:54 timeframe): Following this stuff, there are many lines of GPU restarts

They were playing Minecraft and it crashed? You have 16GB of memory. What brand? Mac's can be picky about memory. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S16P/   Video games use both a lot of memory and also graphics. Your computer has graphic switching. Which I believe can be disabled so it runs on the intel graphics card. There was a recall for video issues with your model.  https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

Yes playing Minecraft when the computer became unresponsive. It seems to happen most of the time either during their minecraft or watching videos on the computer (YouTube, netflix, etc). I have the exact RAM you linked above from OWC, it has been in the computer for about a month. I replaced the original RAM as I thought that was the problem. It seemed to work ok for several weeks and I thought it was fixed, but the problems came back. I tried the graphics switching disable through System Preferences and doesn't seem to help. I have seen the video issue recall and thought that may be the problem.

Is the GPU dump restart related to the graphics?

Since the Minecraft crash, I have had a heck of a time keeping it running, it has crashed several times since and is basically unusable. Not a good night for my MacBook.

I have a link. Read the crash report and compare it to yours.   https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6701281?start=0&tstart=0   Do you have an external drive that is connected and on? If you have any external devises connected remove them and try running. Then add them back one at a time. When you restored, did you run disk utilities for the hard drive.  Do you have two internal hard drives?

Same stuff in the crash report... looks like it may be the graphics card. I do have a Network Hard drive but it is not connected to the computer, it is connected through an Airport Base station. I have tried disconnecting it from the airport and same results. I am going to try to erase the hard drive and do a fresh install of OS X to see if it helps.

I did run disk utilities and it found nothing wrong. Only have one internal hard drive.

Will be calling apple tomorrow to discuss the issue and see if I fall in the warranty for the issue linked earlier. I wish there was an apple store closer to me. I will keep you updated on how it is going.

    Thanks again for your help!

Just wanted to report back to let you know since I did a complete reinstall of OS X after formatting the entire hard drive, I have not had any issues. (knock on wood)

    Couple things to note:

    1. I do have the graphics switching turned off. (i was having a hard time getting it to turn off before the fresh install)

    2. I do not have all the software that I had before, yet.

    3. I plan on installing the stuff in steps to see if I can find a culprit. (hopefully not)

    4. Since this was my first mac several years ago, I installed things like antivirus, cleaners, etc, but I have learned much about Macs since and know that now I don't need those things.

One final question related to the graphics switching: Is this just a band-aid by keeping it turned off and covering up a hardware problem with the Mac. Maybe it truly does need to be repaired if this is what was causing it.

Thanks for all the help those who commented earlier and hopefully the problem is gone!

To answer your question. You would have to try it with the graphics switched on to see if this is a problem. Your year and model Macbook pro Came with ether a 10.6 install disk or 10.7. If it came with 10.6 then on the disk is the apple hardware test. If 10.7 it should b on line. In ether case you can run this, ether by putting in the disk and starting with the D key down or if on line just starting with the D key down. Run the long test. This test is not definitive, but it may show if you have hardware problems.

Thanks, I have run the long diagnostic test and found nothing. I am hesitant to turn back on the switching, but probably should do it to see if that was the problem. Looks like apple is only fixing the affected MPBs through 2016 for free, after that its on the owner.

Ok, thanks! So after a few days with the newly installed OS and graphics switching turned off, no problems. I thought I would try to turn it on and almost immediately (within minutes), the computer locked up and was crashing only to be reset with the option-command-r reset. Had to do this a few times before computer would restart to desktop, then turned off graphics switching and no problems since....

Sound like the graphics card issue to you? It sure does to me, now to convince apple to fix it.

Absolutely. That would fit right in with the recall. You can even bring a copy of the crash report.
