Dec 20, 2015 5:28 AM in response to MIDI444by Terence Devlin,You are not using iPhoto now. New Macs come with a new app called Photos, it has many of the same features, plus more, but is not exactly the same.
Couple of things thigh: you could not merge folders in iPhoto either, but you could merge Events. Photos does not have Events as a concept, it uses a feature called Moments. They're a little more restrictive than iPhoto's Events, but the Albums are the same. It has more powerful editing features and it has the iCloud Photo Library to facilitate managing images across all your devices.
The forum for that app is here
Also read the help on the app too.

Dec 20, 2015 5:33 AM in response to MIDI444by léonie,is this normal if so I'm not a happy bunny !!!
It is normal, sorry.
Photos is completely different from iPhoto. See: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
There are no more events, like iPhoto had. Events have been replaced by the "Moments". And you do not have to organize the moments, like you managed the events. Moments are created automatically for you, based on the same location and time. All photos you have taken at the same place at the same time will appear in the same moment. related moments will be grouped as collections, so all your vacation pictures from your last vacation should appear in the same collection. And collections are grouped by years. You access this view from the "Photos" view.
Because Photos has no events, all your events will now have been replaced by albums, so when you browse the "iPhoto events" folder, the "events" will behave like an album, not like iPhotos events behaved.
I find it easier to browse the albums from the sidebar. Reveal the sidebar with the shortcut ⌥⌘S. then you can quickly open albums by clicking the disclosure triangles to the leftof the folders with albums.
You could try to stick with iPhoto on your new Mac, if you prefer iPhoto. You need iPhoto 9.6.1 on El Capitan.
If you are seeing iPhoto among your Purchases at the App Store, you could install iPhoto from the fourth tab - Purchases - of the App Store and open your iPhoto Library in Photos. Just rename the filename extension ".migratedphotolibrary" of the iPhoto Library back to ".photolibrary".

Dec 20, 2015 10:23 AM in response to MIDI444by Old Toad,Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear. It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue. Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.
