Q: iPad stopped working and I can't get it started

Hi all,  I have an iPad 3rd Gen (wifi and 3G).  I keep it updated and in the last couple for days there were some significant number of App updates.  It always struggles when downloading MS Office updates and yesterday was no exception.  As well as that it wanted to restart very regularly and a number of the apps which had downloaded and installed suddenly would start updating again.  To top it off, it suddenly began to restart but never completed.  Since then I have tried resetting many times and eventually I got to the iTunes reconnect screen, which I tried to do.  iTunes advised that the iPad needed updating or restoring and I have now attempted that on several occasions and eventually received an error message: "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad "iPad".   An unknown error occurred (9006)..."

This error suggests there is some network issue connecting to the Support server, but I have no issues connecting to anything else.

My life is on the iPad and I need to recover it as soon as possible.  Can anyone please assist?

    Hi, Bilgolajon.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand the behavior of your iPad was erratic and after a restore attempt you received error 9006.  While it sounds like you may have attempted some troubleshooting steps, I am unsure which ones you've gone through.  Here is the most relevant troubleshooting information I can suggest for this error.

    Check your security software

    Errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1611, 9006.

Sometimes security software can stop your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.

Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't blocking a connection to the Apple servers.

If you still see the error message, check for USB connection issues.

    Check your USB connections

    Errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4005, 4013, 4014. You might also see a message that includes "invalid response."

If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you might not be able to update or restore.

To narrow down the issue, try different equipment:

If you still see the error message, check for hardware issues.

    Check for hardware issues

    Errors: 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 53, 56, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.

Your device or computer might have a hardware issue that stops the update or restore from completing.

    1. Check that your security software and settings aren't blocking your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
    2. Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
    3. Make sure that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
    4. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

    Hi Jason,

I have been through the various troubleshooting steps previously.  I am able to start downloading the restore file from the Apple server.  This file is about 1.5Gb.  It never seems to finish downloading to be able to move to the next step of actually applying the restore file to the iPad.

    Thanks
