If your Mac is running slow, check to see if there's enough available storage space.
Click the Apple top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 10% free disk space. OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?

Not to mention that a lot of folks upgrade their OS X with too little RAM to handle it - System requirements are not necessarily Recommended for Optimal Performance
