Q: Slow mac book 13" late '07

My wife's mac book is running pretty slow and safari was next to useless until I repaired permissions this morning.  I ran Etrecheck and the results are below.  I know I need to remove the parallels startup items but I can't find them.

Thanks for looking!

EtreCheck version: 2.6.6 (226)

Nothing jumps out at me except that you could use more memory. at least 4 GB of it. Parallels  is only out of date if you a running Yosemite. The report states  10.7.5. In internet plug-ins you have flash player twice so you could delete one. Chrome doesn't use it. See if there is an update for parallels for your operating system. You repaired permissions, which you say helped. Go into recovery and use the disk utilities to check/ repair the hard drive. If you have the drive backed up you could use recovery to reinstall the operating system to see if that helps. You do not need to erase and normally this will not remove any files you installed. If your slow downs are mostly in safari, clean out history and cache files. Also check the extension. you can turn them off and see if it helps.

Thanks for the reply, I wanted to wait to add ram until it was running better.  Its running much better now all around, so Santa will probably spring for a ram upgrade.

I agree with the recommendation to upgrade RAM. I think that model can use up to 6GB? I have a similar one with 4GB and it runs alright

Also, has the hard drive ever been replaced? If not, that may be failing as well. Have you used Disk Utility to verify the disk?

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

I put in a 500gb drive a while ago when the first one got down to 5% free, that helped too at the time.  I have verified the disk and it's al good, thank you for your reply.

Okay - good. That rules out the hard drive as the source of your problem.

A RAM upgrade from either of the sites that Eric mentioned should help. My MacBook is similar age and runs decently - takes a little while to fire up if it's been shut down, but it does alright otherwise.

Hopefully you can breathe new life into this one

Now that it's running better I have another question.  I got my wife a new phone last night and when trying to synch iTunes gives me a message "The iPhone “Olivia’s iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."  However iTunes is version 12.2.2.25, and it worked with her iPhone 5, which was also iOS 9.2.

I can't update the OS x apparently so I'm stuck with how to get the phone to sync with the computer now.

Other people have had that problem. Here is a link on it. You may have to use the Itunes store with wifi to do the sync. Which supposedly will work after you do this.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203075
