Q: Migration Assitant - stuck transferring data from PC

I am trying to transfer all my user data from my laptop (running Vista) to my Mac Mini (running El Capitan), using Migration Assistant. I have tried several times, selecting different sets of daa to transfer. The transfer process, which identifies the laptop and starts the transfer easily, "hangs" towards the end of the transfer time (which for my music files is hours), and so does not complete. I have turned firewall off. Can anyone please suggest how this might be resolved before I have to resort to manual data transfer?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

You using your home network..? If so, try using a direct ethernet cable connection between the computers.

If the choices at > How to transfer data from a PC to a Mac - Apple Support are not working, then manually moving your data over is likely the best solution.

Hi. I was using an ethernet direct connection. I have also tried over wifi,  but same thing happens. I have also tried access my Mac Mini from the PC, but weven though the Mac Mini appears on the network seen by the PC, I cannot log in to my Mac Mini that way, even tough I turned on remote access/sharing in the System Preferences on my Mac Mini. So I'm at a loss as to what else to try

On your laptop, you should probably do a "chkdsk" and make sure there

are no file, directory, or other disk problem problems.  Usually the case

when any sort of transfer hangs from a Windows machine.  Some file or directory that

hasn't been touched in a while could be messed up.

Mmmm. The CHKDSK utility won't run, which in itself is of course a problem. Looks like I will have to resort to manual transfer, unless I can get the mchines to recognise each other and allow access!
