My Pages app got stuck updating and I was finally able to delete it through Settings.  I did a hard reset and tried to download again but it is stuck again downloading and I can't delete it again.  Numbers upgraded just fine.

    Hi,

I have the same issue with keynote, the app downloads but doesn't install. This prevents me from backing up my iphone on icloud or on my computer.

When I saw your post I thought the horror would finally be over, but I tried all you said in every possible order and nothing works for me :/

Could you make a more precise step by step procedure so I can see what I'm missing here ?

(Also when I delete the app using manage settings it reappears as soon as I open the settings again ... I guess that's the issue ?)

    Thanks a lot !

Look at my posts on the previous page -- there's a step-by-step there.  Also, see this post:

This is annoying, isn't it!  There may be another step involved:  deleting the app from your library, then redownloading it.  I handle this though iTunes on my computer, but the same is possible over the air through App Store.  That way, if you delete the old file, you are assured of getting a fresh start with everything.  Remember to do everything in the exact order:  delete app from library, delete app from phone/iPad using Manage Settings, do the hard reset (yet again!), then try downloading the app again.  It took me a couple of times once I had all the steps to get it all together, but eventually it did work, as it seems to have for most people.  Personally, I forgot the hard reset after all the deletions and had to start over , but it finally did work after doing the entire sequence.  There was something very strange about that update -- I got Numbers and Pages updated fine, but Keynote got stuck for me.  For many others, it seems it was also 1 out of the 3 that got stuck.  Good luck!

The Hard reset is essential to clear junk, and may be what you are missing?

Thanks ! So if I follow your plan:

    1) Link phone to computer

    2) Delete keynote from iTunes library

    3) Delete keynote from phone using Manage settings

    4) Hard reset the phone (holding the home & power button until it turns black and the apple reappears)

    5) Click update keynote on iTunes and proceed to sync the phone

Is that correct ? That's just what I did :/

Maybe I'll try it again, there might be something else I missed.

That's basically it, but I would delay step 1 until after everything is deleted, the app is reloaded in iTunes, and the hard reset is done.  So, do steps 2 &  3 and download Keynote back to your library before connecting phone to iTunes.  Hope that helps!

So I ended up having to delete the app, and lost all my data. I'm surprised that the iTunes back-up to my mainframe doesn't preserve data also? Or does it and I just can't find it? It seems odd that back-ups would only preserve the app, but Apple has been quite cavalier about that kind of thing in my previous experience.

This may be a good reason to enable iCloud back-up for data, but too late if you didn't have a back-up somewhere.  The other place you could look would be your Pages/Keynote/Numbers on your Mac.  If you have the data there and enable iCloud on the Mac and also on your Apple devices, you'll have access to the data from any device using the app.

Because I deal with sensitive data and because Apple doesn't allow us under the hood of the OS to implement our own security controls, I won't be using iCloud. What I was commenting on before is the fact that, though I have "backed up" my device on my mainframe using iTunes, it seems to have only backed up the apps and not the data they contain. This isn't really a back-up, is it?

Anyway, thanks for your help. The problem of data security and data retention is larger than both of us.

It didn't work ... That's too bad, I keep seeing everyone say they solved it but for some reason I can't :/

Maybe I'm not being patient enough.

When deleting the corrupted app using Manage settings, is the corrupted app supposed to disappear ? Because when I do it, the app is still there, even after hard resetting the phone.

The app is about 500Mb so maybe I need to wait a bit after clicking delete the app ?

I'm quite desperate here, any help is welcome :/

Something is wrong, because the app should disappear completely.  It's been awhile so I'm a little fuzzy on how it went, but I do recall having to start over a couple of times because I had not used the right sequence and cleared all the junk with the hard resets.  If you can still see the corrupted app, it will not finish the installation properly.

Deleting the app has no effect on your documents, whether or not they're in the atmosphere.

You docs remain wherever they were to begin with - they could be saved in multiple folders on your computer as they are on mine.

I had an incomplete download of Pages and App Store wouldn't let me download it again.

After deleting Pages from my Applications folder I was able to download it and all my documents were untouched.

This is generally true on the Mac.  But I do NOT think it is safe to assume that is the case in iOS.  In iOS deleting the app CAN delete documents not saved in the cloud or backed up to a Mac via iTunes.  Back up first!!

         D'OH!

I didn't realize this was posted in the iOS forum - I found it while searching for an answer to my desktop issue.

I don't own any iOS devices so it never crossed my mind that this might not be for computers.
