Q: Doesn't charge, until swapping side of original charging cable

My macbook 12 retina doesn't charge, until swapping side of original charging cable. It charges normallly on the one side of usb-c cable, but doesn't charge if you swap the cable, plugged in macbook. Does anybody else have the same problem?

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

I'm having trouble following you. Do you mean that if you plug in one way no charge, but if you reverse the cable it does?Have you done a SMC reset?   http://https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 You may need to take it to the genius bar to be looked at.

I seem to have a similar problem. Tried SMC reset, didn't help. Here is the description:

I am using the original power supply and loading cable. Since Dec. 22, it is loading only in one position of the plug, does not work with the plug turned around, regardless of which end of the cable I use. The same problem arises when I am loading via my Apple Multiport HDMI adapter: it only works in one position of the adapter's plug that goes into the Macbook (while in this configuration the loading cable plug that goes into the adapter does work in both positions). Moreover, no USB device will connect anymore, neither via my Apple USB A-to-C adapter nor via my Apple Multiport HDMI adapter, regardless of any plug position.

To me, this sounds like a problem with the Macbook's USB-C jack, maybe a hardware problem. Has anyone had a similar problem, or heard of it? May there be a solution (other than the obvious one, bringing it in for repair)? Many thanks for your help.

The 2015 Macbook is new to me and I do not own one. But looking up on it I find that Apple has adapter cables to do the various  functions for add ons that you might connect. Apparently these do not come in the box and have to be bough separately. If you buy after market stuff , they may or may not work. Here is a list of some of the different cable that Apple has.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204360 If your USB c port is not working you could try a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys and power button at startup for three chimes. To those of you who have just purchased  your Macbook, you have 90 days of free tech support. Call in and have them run through the problems with you.

Thanks for this, but PRAM reset was the first thing I tried - sorry I didn't include it in the description. (By the way, I am using a Macbook 12", early 2015, with El Capitan 10.11.2, same as Lexx222. Have installed all the latest updates.) I do not use any aftermarket stuff but the original power adapter and charge cable plus the original Apple USB-C to USB and USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapters I bought along with the Macbook a few months ago.

Of course, if necessary I will have to call in at an Apple Store after the holidays but in the meantime - anybody out there having heard about a problem like this?

Same issue here. Looks like hardware issue, but - I have discovered that it work both side is I connect USB-C to regular USB-A wall charger.

I have two USB-A to USB-C cable and two USB-C to USB-C. Both USB-A to USB-C work both side. Both USB-C to USB-C work only one side.

Hopes, if that's hardware issue, Apple would recall affected laptops. The first gen hardware problem.

I finally took my macbook to apple service. They made diagnostics and said, that it's a hardware issue.

It's under guarantee, so they changed microchip, that controls usb-c port. And now everything works great!
