Q: Mail is using up my iPhone 6 battery

I have an iPhone 6 with 9.2 running on it.  When I last upgraded, I kept being asked to input my iCloud password in settings.  I think I have that fixed (somehow), but now my battery is running completely out in 12 hours.  The info on my phone says my Mail program is using 81% of my battery, mostly with background activity.  I basically do not use my phone for checking my mail, except very occasionally if I'm away from home.  I have turned off iCloud mail now, but the phone is still losing power.  Any ideas?  Oh - and I have my setting to manually fetch any mail.  Thanks -

    Hi Nancy,

The resource below provides some additional ways to conserve battery life on your iPhone.  Give these options a try.

About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

    Check battery usage

    Go to Settings > Battery.

To see how long each app has been open and onscreen, and running in the background, tap  . Under each app, you might see these usage types:

    • Background Activity means that your battery is used while apps run in the background.
    • Audio means that apps play audio while running in the background.
    • No Cell Coverage and Low Signal means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal.
    • Backup & Restore indicates that your device has been backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup.
    • Location and Background Location means that your battery was used when tracking your device.

Adjust settings to improve battery life

While viewing your battery usage, you might get a suggestion like Enable Auto-Brightness or Adjust Display Brightness. This is because iOS determined that changing these settings could improve your battery life. You can also see the usage times since the last full charge.

    Use Low Power Mode

If you want to extend your battery life, turn on low power mode. This reduces power consumption until you turn it off or charge your iPhone to 80%. When low power mode is on, certain settings and features like mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects are reduced or disabled.

To turn Low Power Mode on or off, tap Settings > Battery.

Your iPhone will last longer before you need to charge, but some features might take longer to update or to complete. Some tasks might not work until you turn off Low Power Mode, or until you charge your iPhone to 80% or higher. After you charge your iPhone to 80% or higher, Low Power Mode automatically turns off.

Low Power Mode reduces or turns off these features:

    • Email fetch
    • Hey Siri
    • Background app refresh
    • Automatic downloads
    • Wi-Fi associations
    • Some visual effects

When Low Power Mode is on, the battery in the status bar will be yellow. You'll see   and the percent charge.

Low Power Mode is available only on iPhone.

Go to settings>Cellular. Turn mail off.....that way, it will only fetch mail when you are connected to a wi-fi network.
