Q: Is there a way to select between iMessage or email for a contact in iCloud Photo Sharing?

Is there a way to select the method to deliver a sharing notification to a contact within iCloud Photo Sharing on OS X Photos?

For many contacts when selecting an email address to deliver a sharing notification it defaults to 'text' or 'iMessage' and there is no way to select email.

    Hi soltmann,

I understand you want to share your albums with your friends using their email address, but Photos is defaulting to a text or iMessage option instead.   The link below to the Photos Help Guide indicates the email address is the default for notifications.  Is it possible that you do not have an email address in the contact card for some individuals?  What happens when you type an email address in the To: field as instructed below?

    Manage subscribers to shared albums

You can add and remove subscribers to your shared albums at any time. You can also change the settings for a shared album, such as whether subscribers can add their own photos to it, and whether people without a Mac or iOS device can view it on the web.

WARNING: If you plan to remove a subscriber from a shared album, let the subscriber know in case he or she wants to save any photos or video clips from the shared album. When you remove the subscriber, you immediately remove the album and its items from the subscriber’s devices.

Add and remove subscribers to a shared album

    1. Click Shared in the toolbar.

    2. Double-click the shared album whose subscribers you want to change, then click Collaborate button in the toolbar.

    3. In the To field, do one of the following:

      •

Invite a new subscriber: Type an email address.

If the person you’re inviting doesn’t have an iCloud account, select the Public Website checkbox.

      •
      •

Remove a subscriber: Select the subscriber’s email address, then press Delete.

      •
      •

Reinvite a subscriber: Click the down arrow beside the subscriber’s name and choose Resend Invitation.

    4. Click Collaborate button in the toolbar or select a different shared album.

When you invite (or reinvite) someone to view a shared album, the person receives an email asking them to subscribe. When you remove an existing subscriber, the album is immediately removed from the subscriber’s devices.

Change settings for subscribers to a photo album

    1. Click Shared in the toolbar.

    2. Double-click the shared album you want to change, then click Collaborate button in the toolbar.

    3. Do any of the following:

      •

Allow subscribers to post their own photos and videos to the album: Select Subscribers Can Post.

      •
      •

Allow people who don’t have a Mac or iOS device to view the album: Select Public Website.

      •
      •

See a notification whenever a subscriber makes changes to a shared album: Select Notifications.

Note: Subscribers who view your shared album on the web can’t comment on the items in it or view new comments posted by you or others. To make comments visible to someone without a Mac or iOS device, post the comments before you invite the person to view the shared album.

    4. Click Collaborate button in the toolbar again.

    Hope that helps ...

    Happy Holidays!

    Example...

I want Roger to join my shared album because he also took pictures at an event, for which the shared album was created, and I want him to add his pictures. For Roger I have 3 phone numbers and 2 email addresses in Contacts. Roger has an iPhone, iPad and a MacBook Pro. I want him to join from his Macbook Pro because he manages pictures taken with his DSLR in OS X Photos. When I select his home email address to send the invitation, which is the email he uses for his iCloud account, the descriptor indicates he will receive a "text" at that email address, not "email". His email is @comcast.net, which is not utilized for text messages. Consequently he doesn't receive the invitation.

I also added myself to the sharing list and deliberately chose an @gmail.com address rather than my @mac.com email. The subsequent result indicates the that the @gmail.com account will receive a "text" message, not an email. Consequently I did not receive a text or iMessage at the @gmail.com address.

    Hi soltmann,

Thank you for providing a little more background regarding your situation.  The email account that is used for iCloud should be working in this scenario.   At this point, I would suggest contacting one of our technical advisors so that they can work with you one-to-one to troubleshoot this issue.  They have tools at their disposal like screensharing which may be helpful in getting to the bottom of this.  Click on the link below to initiate that support.  Refer the advisor to this thread so that he or she can what information you have already provided.
