Q: OS X El Capitan crashes MacBook Pro 5,5

Hello folks, I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (Model 5,5) currently running OS X El Capitan 10.11.2.  I upgraded from Snow Leopard about a month ago.  The update itself was smooth but I began experiencing troubles from day one.  Mac just crashes at random intervals.  I cannot figure out what triggers it, I see no pattern to it.  Sometimes it crashes when I'm running multiple apps (Chrome, iTunes, etc), but it has also crashed while idle.  Sometimes it'll crash reboot, reopen the programs that had previously been open, and crash again within 10 minutes.  I mostly use my Mac for browsing with Chrome and to manage my music. Not running (at least knowingly) any old software which may be incompatible or what not...

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and successfully resolved?  Help please!

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), iPhone 3.0 8gb

    Hi luisroj,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I'm sorry to hear you have been having these issues with your MacBook Pro since your El Capitan upgrade. If you continue to have intermittent but persistent hard hangs or crashes, with no obvious cause, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

Can you post the panic log. You can find it in the Console app under the heading, System Diagnostic Reports. The name will begin with Kernel and contain a date/time stamp. Just select the most recent log, copy the text from he display, then paste into a reply here.

It is possible you have older, incompatible kernel extensions loading that are causing the panics.

There is nothing that points to a third-party software problem. There doesn't appear to be any external hardware attached, either.

So, you may have a hardware problem. If you have the original RAM, replace it and see if the problems cease. RAM is the most common problem, and I can't find anywhere that states that RAM is compatible with Apple products.

Hi!  Thanks for taking a look.  I should have mentioned that I do have 4GB of third-party RAM installed on the MacBook (8GB total), though these never gave me any issues in Snow Leopard.  I doubt El Capitan will be enjoyable with only 4GB of RAM. I'll remove that RAM though to test whether the crashes subside.

According to the kernel panic, you have two sticks of Kingston RAM (the two hexadecimal strings at the end indicate manufacturer and model number). I guess it is possible that Apple used that brand (I never would), but I don't think I've ever seen it used by them before. I've obviously never looked at every Mac produced, so it is possible.

I doubt El Capitan will be enjoyable with only 4GB of RAM.

The test isn't a permanent fix. It is merely meant to rule out the possibility.
