Q: update and encryption issue

I just received a used MacBook Pro and had enable the HD encryption. I then attempted to update the OS but the update is failing because the HD is still encrypting. I have two questions. First, How can I ensure the encryption process is running and will continue to run because the computer can no longer log in and it continually shuts itself down if I leave it at the prompt scree. Second, will this encryption every stop now and allow me to finish the OS upgrade?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

I would not attempt to install anything while the encryption process is happening.

I would though backup your data before installing anything*:
