Q: ios 9 update battery drain problem

First, don't respond with general battery life advice!  After upgrade to ios 9 then 9.01, the battery life on my iphone 5s has been reduced dramatically.

This is not a settings issue as I verified all my previous settings are the same as before the update.  All location services and background app refreshes are off and were off prior to the update.

There is clearly a problem with the ios using more resources.  All the responses I have seen regarding this issue give the same general advice for conserving battery life. This is not a "settings" issue - update resulted in maybe 50-60% of the previous battery life.

Any fixes in the works?

    Hello applepasion.

I have the same problem as Applepasion and to a lesser extent CrawlerChris.

When the iphone is on.. it drains at a rate of about 16% every 5 hours.  This is not normal.  This was happening on ios 9.1 as well as upgraded ios 9.2.  I've factory reset it by using erase all settings, but the battery drain problem still occurs.

I also tried different batteries as I thought it might be a battery problem (it still could be) but I am experiencing fast battery drain.

I've owned multiple apple devices.. and on a factory reset iphone.. it should only drain 1 or 2 percent every few hours.  Not at a rate of 3-4% (especially when the iphone is essentially in airplane mode).

I agree with you Applepasion.. there may be some of us who have some kind of rare hardware issue.  I think CrawlerChris has it worst.  As even though his iphone is turned off, the battery is still draining.

In my case, my iphone is completely factory reset.  I guess I could do a clean ios 9.2 ipsw restore from itunes.  I may try one more good battery too.  There isn't much more troubleshooting I can do with the limited diagnostic tools available from apple.

Lawrence Finch, I agree that many of these problems can be fixed by isolating the problem app (due to upgrading IOS).  It is still unfortunate for the small population that has to run into this problem and have to fix by examining what apps might be draining the problem.

What app is using the most battery? If you go to Settings/Battery it will list the apps that use power, with the biggest offender at the top. And if you tap on the screen the display will switch to show the foreground and background usage.

    Hello Lawrence,

Thank you for the suggestion.  This iphone has been idle, so no apps show up in battery usage at the bottom.  See embedded image below.

After 7 hours of idle usage.. 30%+ battery usage which is roughly ~4% battery loss per hour.  In the screenshot.. there's nothing below if I keep on scrolling down or try clicking on "Usage".

Originally, at ios 9.1 factory reset.. I had about 4% battery usage per hour idle/no usage.

I upgraded 9.2  upgrade from itunes... I still had about 4% battery usage per hour idle/no usage.

Did factory reset using "Erase all content and settings" from settings menu.    I had about 4% battery usage per hour idle/no usage.

There is a possibility it could be a poor performing battery, but I've tried 2-3 different batteries already.  Will be trying one more battery but that will take some time to test.

As I'd mentioned before.  I do agree with you in most cases that battery drain issues are a result of an app causing issues.  Mine definitely isn't (unless the ios upgrade wasn't properly done and it requires a complete factory re-install of the ios 9.2 ipsw).. so I'm one of the less then a percent that have some kind of hardware issue.  I'm leaning towards battery but it could be the iphone itself.

I had the same mysterious battery drain issues after updating to 9.2 and did all the voodoo stuff mentioned in this thread but with no positive result.

I checked the battery health which was about right for the phones age.

It wasn't until I received a Carrier Setting update about a week ago that all of a sudden I'm back to getting multi day standby life on the phone and its no longer always tepid.

If your phone is unlocked you might be able to try using a SIM from another carrier for a few days.

Update your device to lates iOS 9.2. I've installed it and my battery drain issue is gone. iOS 9.2 is much better than old patches

I have an iPhone 5s with iOS 9.2 - and am having battery drain problems.  The battery drains about 10% per hour on standby.  I've tried all the usual changes in settings with no luck.  Here is what I have found consistently - if I "reset all settings" the battery life magically becomes great - about 1% drain per hour on standby.  But anytime I go to reboot, it is back to a fast draining battery.   I reset all settings again, and it's back to good battery life.  This has got to be something going on with the OS.  I check and there are no apps listed as using battery life.  I did go to the Genius Bar and had the battery tested, and it is fine. It would be interesting to know if others have the same pattern.

Charge the phone to 100%. Use it for an hour, and actually use an app or two. Then go to Settings/Battery. It should list all of the apps that have used energy. Tap on the screen and it will show the breakdown of foreground vs background.

Apple can't fix it because it isn't a bug. It's an app that is using the battery. Go to Settings/Battery to see which one.

I'm using same apps since last few months after 9.1 and 9.2 I found this issue, I'm continuously monitoring the battery usage it's normal.

If it's issue in apps then slowly slowly battery consumed not like from 40% to 5% within seconds.

If any app updated and cause of this reason how we know.

This situation is getting ridiculous. Everyone is saying the apps but I am using the same apps as I was before the battery issues. I have just looked at the usage and it shows Home and Lock Screen has used 21% of my battery...what is it doing?!?!? I am trying to close all apps as soon as I finish with them. My battery is showing as 25% and I have used an hour with standby at 8 hrs since last full charge. I often get the phone just shut off with no battery even though it is displaying 30, 40, 50% +

The issue has to be down to Apple, I never had it before I updated to IOS 9!!!!

What troubleshooting have you done? Battery drain can affect any version; it is not version specific (except for iOS 2.1 seven years ago, which really did have a problem. But it was fixed in a couple of weeks). Here's the ultimate test: Back up your phone to iTunes (make it an encrypted backup so it includes your health app data and passwords, but don't forget the password!). After backing up, Restore iOS on your phone. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not create any email accounts. Do not add any apps. Use it for a while. You will notice that the battery life is good. Now connect it to iTunes again and restore the backup. It may still be good, because the problem was transient. But if it comes back the problem is an app.

I have this problem too with my iPhone 6+ and even my Touch ID does not work anymore.  My phone has not even been repaired before.

Had this problem; Messages was doing like 5-6hrs of background activity per day.

I did an Apple online chat a few days ago and they recommended going to General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings.  This kept all my apps and data, but wiped out things like wallpaper and settings, etc.  But it solved the problem.  Something else to try!
