Q: icloud photo library synch

Hi,

I have recently decided to synch all my photographs via iCloud Photo Library.

I wanted to keep the originals on my iMac but synch to my phone and iPad.

Now, I am a bit of a snap happy person and had pictures going back 10-15 years, in fact there are over 18,000 of them. I will go back later a delete a few but want to keep what I had for a while.

I originally just kept a copy on my iMac and then synched to my iPad via iTunes. I have everything in albums which was quite good.

This process has been synching for about a week, but nothing has happened for at least a day and there are still about 600 pictures to synch. I checked the albums and a lot of the pictures in them are a bit blurry but they are the only record of have of my travels and want to keep them.

Can you tell me what I should do. Or shpould I just go back to what I had before and synch using the iTunes and iPhoto and Photo Stream.

Can anyone make a suggestion?

Regards

Chris

It is not unusual for a library of that size to take so long to upload or even longer without any visible progress.

Where is it hanging?  Is the upload to iCloud Photo Library from your Mac hanging, or the syncing with iPhone and iPad?

Is your Mac showing a progress bar in the Photos > Preferences > iCloud? Or is the progress bar gone?

You may want to check with a smart album, if your Photos Library is containing photos or videos, that cannot upload .

Use "File > New Smart album" and these settings:

How much storage do you have on your iPhone and iPad? with your large Photos library you will need to enable "optimize Storage" on the mobile devices. So not all photos willl be stored locally and they will look blurry, until you download them from iCloud Photo Library.

    Hi,

The bar is not hanging, it says that "updated just now".

I have used the smart album thing and it showsScreen Shot 2015-12-24 at 8.33.52 PM.png

It would appear that it is unable to upload these albums for some reason. The albums exist in photos and they have content but when i look at the thumbnails most are blurred. I open the image and it is OK. There are 5 albums like this all with iamges taken in 2006.

All the other albums have loaded ok. So it appears that the images have not been uploaded from the Mac

    Regards

I should also add that I have set mine to keep the originals on the Mac. In these albums the thumbnails mostly remain blurry until I clock them open and then they are ok.

After the thumbnails have been rebuild this way, are the photos still unable to upload to iCloud Photo Library?

If openening the photos in question makes them able to upload select several photos at once in the album, then rotate them by entering the key combination ⌘R to rotate the photos. Then rotate them back by enterinr ⌥⌘R  to rotate them back.

Select on of the photos in the album "Unable to upload" and open the Info panel  with ⌘I .  Look at the file type. Does the photo have an unusual file type?  Not all image formats can upload to iCloud. If the files are .PICT, .bmp, or an unusual graphics format convert them to a different image format with Preview.

    From the article below.

iCloud Photo Sharing supports JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and most RAW photo formats. When shared, photos taken with standard point-and-shoot cameras, SLR cameras, or iOS devices will have up to 2048 pixels on the long edge. Panoramic photos can be up to 5400 pixels wide.

iCloud Photo Sharing supports both MP4 and QuickTime video file types, and H.264 and MPEG-4 Video file formats. Videos can be up to 5 minutes in length and are delivered at up to 720p resolution.

Thanks. Images in question are all JPEG but are at the max of 2048 pixels.

OK.on creating the album "unable to upload all the images there appeared and after a while the thumbnails were all clear.

Each image in this album is the max 2048 pixels but they all now appear as clear thumbnail and open well. The interesting thing though is, unlike all the other albums I am unable to do any editing of the images. I am able to edit images in all other albums except these. I even have an album with pictures on 1.5M and are 3000 x 4000 and can edit.

Maybe I shall have to photoshop the images ??????

    Regards

This can happen, if Photos has lost the connection between the original image files and the edited versions in your library.  Or, if Photos still needs to download the original file from the iCloud Photo Library. Do you have "Optimize Mac storage" enabled? Then you need to wait for the original  image file to download from iCloud before you can edit the photo.

No, I have "Download originals to this Mac" maybe that is the reason?

Sometime ago I looked at using the iCloud for storage but was not sure. I have now decided to use it but maybe some of the originals are still there.

Maybe I should enable "optimize mac storage"?

Not sure if this is relevant but I just discovered that my Photos Library is stored in my Dropbox. Don't know when or how that happened as I thought it was stored on my Mac. I am not sure if this upsets the iCloud settings? Maybe that is the reason for the additional pictures not synching?

    I am confused

Try moving your Photos Library to your Pictures folder. You will need to adjust the Library location in Photos/Preferences.

Thanks Eric. I have tried that. Still no difference. The pictures are in albums I created ages ago when i synched with iTune. Everything was OK when I synched that way.

They were all taken at the same time. I cannot even edit the pictures in Photos but other albums taken at the same time are ok.

    A bit of a nuisance.

What do you mean by "rebuilt"m Leonie? All the images in the albums on Photos are now clear but they are still unable to be edited or they will not synch. I have checked a huge sampling and they are all JPEG files.

This is a real nuisance. there are close on 700 files which will not load.
