Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your external monitor connected to your MacBook Pro. Let's see if we can get that sorted out.
I would first check in the Display pane in System Preferences to see if the display shows up. If it does, then you can click on Gather Windows button to then change the resolution to see if that may be the reason of the display not showing. Another thing you can try is to use a different cable. Take look at the article below to go over that and other troubleshooting options to get your Dell monitor to work with your Mac.
