Q: Windows installation failed

Hi there,

Macbook Pro - mid 2012 - 13''

Apple 500GB HDD

Samsung 500GB SSD (instead of optical drive)

El Capitan on the SSD - Bootcamp should be on the SSD as well.

While installing windows I already get this message:

IMAG1492.jpg

after installing I get the message that the computer can't be prepared for the next installation step. Reboot to windows after installation doesn't work. Tried different windows version and different usb-sticks.

Disconnect the disk that will not be used for Windows from SATA bus. Put it in an external enclosure and boot from it, if necessary. Put the designated Windows drive in the Main Bay. Use the USB installer to install Windows on the designated Windows drive. Once completed, install the other non-Windows disk in the Optibay and test both OSes.

Do not discard your Optical drive.

Thanks Loner for all the very fast answeres and help!!

I unplugged the HDD once and installed OSX plus Bootcamp-win7 on the SSD and both systems worked... as long as I did NOT connect the 2nd HDD again

so I can do it again - but is there anything I need to care about while installing that it will work in the end with the HDD plugged as well?

Was the 2nd HDD in the Optibay or the main bay? If you move the Windows disk from the main bay to Optibay after Windows is installed, you will run into problems.

No success yet Installed win7 without problems on the SSD (HDD unplugged), but as soon as I plug the HDD again - windows can't boot anymore.

Also tried to format the HDD with Master Boot Record instad of GUID, but doesn't change anything

Which SATA connector/bay is the Windows installation connected to?

both (OSX and win7) are on the optical drive plug Samsung SSD...

the strange and annoying thing is, that I already had a both-systems-working-machine. The only bad thing was, that the windows partition had around 80% space of the SSD... I wanted to change that and tried to re-install everything and now it's not working anymore.

Please move the SSD to main bay.

What OS X version upgrades and software upgrades have been applied to the working state?

I think I had Yosemite on the working state. Now it's El Capitan... so more or less the same?

...well I can change the SSD to the other plug... did it once and found out, that the HDD-noice is very loud then...

you think there's no other way to get to a working state again without switching the drives?

The UI may look the same, but they are significantly different. You must have at least a few EFI updates as well.

The HDD noise is because the Optibay is not really meant to handle a 5400/7200 rpm mechanical HDD. It can be reduced using a good Optibay caddy.

would it be better/easier to put the 2 disks together to a fusion drive and install OSX and win7 then?

...probably win7 is on the HDD then instead of the SSD... so loosing performance... Or can I use both systems on the SSD then.

    1. Disconnect the HDD from the Optibay connector.

    2. With the SSD in the main bay, install OSX and W7.

    3. Erase HDD.

    4. Use diskutil cs convert the OSX SSD part to CS.

    5. Connect the HDD to SATA in Optibay.

    6. Use diskutil cs addDisk to add the HDD the CS.

    7. Address any noise issues.

    Syntax for cs addDisk is...

    diskutil cs addDisk

Usage:  diskutil coreStorage addDisk lvgUUID NewMemberDeviceName

Add a new physical volume to a CoreStorage logical volume group.

Ownership of the affected disks is required.

    Example: diskutil coreStorage addDisk

             11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 disk4s2
