Q: Handling grey stars

If iTunes is going to assign ratings to my podcast episodes when I have NOT assigned a rating (grey stars), why in the world can't the smart playlists include the ability to filter according to whether the star is grey or black?  Essentially this change in iTunes that forces ratings on unrated items has destroyed my ability to filter my lists the way I want to.  Now I am forced to give each episode a black star rating to override the grey star rating iTunes assigns or lose my ability to filter.  I can't remove the grey star ratings without resetting all of the black star ratings for the whole set of podcasts, which also destroys my filtering system.  I wish they would revert to their previous method of not having iTunes assign anything without my approval.

Here are four scripts that can clear or reset album and track auto ratings. They each work on the current selection of tracks in iTunes. The first two work by setting a manual rating of 1% which displays as no stars and should work properly with your smart playlists. The second pair restore the default behaviour. You'll still likely have to do some management as new items are added to your library, but it might make it easier.

Save them in User/Library/iTunes/Scripts with their respective filenames and you can access them from the iTunes menu bar.

Thank you very much for this info.  This aspect of iTunes has be bugging me recently and I feel a applescript coming on to remedy the shortcomings of iTunes (why did they remove opening playlists in separate windows).

Yes, there are parallel scripts at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp
