Q: "server does not allow relaying" email error

Since upgrading to iPhone 4, sending an email always results in the error message "A copy has been placed in your outbox. The recipient "......@...." was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying. This happens regardless of the recipent. It also happens to a friend of mine who still has the iPhone 3G but has updated software. HELP PLEASE.

iPhone 4, iOS 4

It helped me but when I sent an email it asked for the password.

Should I do something else as well?

You must enter a user id and password for the outgoing mail server as well as for the incoming mail server. When you set up most email accounts you must enter your user id and password twice, once for incoming, and again for the outgoing (SMTP) server. Microsoft Exchange and iCloud are exceptions, but most other ISPs and email providers require this.

You are a genius. I called Apple with this issue and I was told that because I upgraded to the newest iOS, that my account was no longer compatible. I kept asking questions and making comments and the guy on the phone was rude and said, "I'm not going to argue with you. Your email account is no longer compatible with the iOS you are using."  Well, he was wrong. I followed the exact steps you suggested and my email is working just fine so far!  Thank you so much for your help!  I really appreciate it.        Jelkap4u

I had this issue today and the only thing that fixed the issue was to turn off the primary server. Once i did that everything worked fine,  all outgoing mail was sent just perfect.  Why this just started to be a problem i will never know because her account was always set up the same, however just turning off that primary server was the only fix in my case.  Adding or changing the passwords and user name did not help at all.   Hope this will help someone in the future.

damnbraces: Yes they can, but it's necessary to know how to use them.

Thank you! I am not tech savvy and didn't know how to do what several of the others posted.  When I went to where they suggested I enter a username and password, those options were grayed out for me and nothing I did let me access them.  (Not that I would have known what to enter there.) SMTP??? and it wouldn't let me turn the server off... every time I attempted, it turned itself back 'on'...

anyway, your way worked for me

    Thx!

I tried everything you have said....NOTHING!! I have reached out to AOL and they say it's an Apple thing. What is strange is my phone and my Mac desk top stopped receiving and sending AOL mail at the same time for no reason!?! The system still shows wrong user name or password and neither is incorrect!!

Delete the AOL account from your iPhone, then add it back.
