Q: New iPad: restore data from old iPad, but...

I got a new iPad. I previously backed up my old iPad to iTunes and wanted to set up the new iPad by restoring data from that backup. BUT, when I connected to iTunes I learned that I must update the OS first. It would NOT let me restore from a backup! I had to set up as a new iPad.

So, I have done the install of the new OS. But, I have a lot of apps and data from the old iPad that I want on the new iPad. How can I quickly transfer this data? I have found no method of now restoring from that backup of the old iPad. Frustrated!

iPad Air2, iOS 9.2

    Follow the directions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203434

Basically, now that the iOS is updated you need to erase the iPad and then you can restore from backup. -AJ

Thanks AJ!  That's what I am doing and it appears to be working! Whew! That was going to be a lot of headache. I knew there must be a better way!

One more question on this subject...

I have been in the updating mode now for about an hour. The little message at the top of the page is "waiting for items to copy." When I look at the new iPad, I see a great many app icons greyed out, showing them to be in the downloading process. Other things, like my Mail accounts, calendar, notes, reminders are updated with all current data. I'm guessing I had around 24 Gb of apps and data on the old iPad. Does this sound like everything's proceeding normally? If I were actually downloading a bunch of apps, I would expect some of them to show completely downloaded while the rest were cued. It looks like all the apps are in a cue to be downloaded. I'm hoping we don't have a problem, because I have no idea what would happen if I interrupted this process, or even how to do that!

Okay, figured this one out myself.

I went to the App Store and to the Purchased section. I identified all the apps that had not yet downloaded and each of them had the little cloud icon in the App Store. So, I just clicked on each of them and they started downloading. In not too long I had them all downloaded. Then, surprisingly, the update indicated it was over. I then just synced and made sure everything was in order. I had to sign in to a few apps to let them authenticate. But, it went well. Done.

Glad you are up and running. A restore from backup can sometimes take a bit of time, especially if you have a lot of data.
