Q: command v

Command v keyboard shortcut does not work. Can use edit menu but not keyboard, anyone know why?

Macbook pro running 10.11.2

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

    What are you trying to do with command v and how are you trying to do it? Are you highlighting what you want to copy then copying it with command c? Then are you placing your cursor where you want to place what you copied then using command v?

    Yes Bob for the past 31 years that I have owned a Mac command v has been the ubiquitous keyboard shortcut that works everywhere in MAC OS, now it doesn't on my Macbook Pro. It doesn't work in the finder or any other program.

    My question is, does any know why and is there a fix?

    It does not appear to be a hardware problem, both keys work fine.

    Still using the original keyboard that is built into the laptop.

    I just tried the guest account and same issue. I opened notepad, typed a few lines, command a to select all, command c to copy...I see edit menu blink in response to command c then command v...and nothing

    I was hoping the behavior was limited to your user, it would be a lot easier to troubleshoot.

    You could try a re-install of the system from your Recovery volume. This wouldn't touch any of your data or settings. I just have no idea which dongle would control those shortcuts on a systemwide basis.

    That was a good idea, this has actually been going on for awhile now maybe 6-8 months and I just figured someone would fix it and when I updated it would all be good. There was a time when you could decide all of the global shortcuts but I can't find that in preferences anywhere.

    Thinking must be a software incompatibility...I have a lot of software and nothing new in the last 6 months but updates happen all the time so I'm on the hunt for answers. Thank you for your input.

    Have a look here. SMC reset...worth a try.

    Command-V will not work!

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Linc, I have tried this just as you outlined, Same problem in safe mode and same result after reboot. This may or may not be related but I use to be able to double tap the window header and drag just like using click drag with a mouse, I can no longer do this either.

    If you're sure that you reproduced the problem in another account and also in safe mode, you should reinstall OS X. Ask if you need guidance. Back up all data first.

    I'm certain, plus it is not just my Macbook Pro, my son has a newer model 2012 mine is 2009 but his is not running El Capitan yet and he has the same problem. We don't really share much(no software) but our computers are on the same network. Have checked for viruses, reset pram, safe boot, different user, etc. I even have backup computer so if I have a hardware failure I just swap the two drives 1TB Solid state and 250GB Solid State in the optical bay.

    I get the same thing in both Macs, which makes me believe has to be in software somewhere.
