Q: How to Login Without Requiring A Password

I am brand new to the inner workings of a mac. I'm normally a PC person and while that still is my primary computer, I also purchased my very first mac. I've worked with mac's before, but I've never had to set one up or install software. I have to do some scavenger hunting, but I'm doing OK for the most part. However, one area is bothering me a little bit. Each time I turn the computer on, I have to enter a password to access the desktop. Is there a way to bypass this? On my pc, I have it setup where I don't have to enter a password each time. I hit the power button and it logs me in and goes right to my desktop.

I did see an option under System Preferences --> Users & Groups, for automatic login, but the drop down box is grayed out (I did click the padlock at the bottom to make changes). Under Security & Privacy, I also tried deselecting the "Require Password" box, but when I restarted, I still had to login.

Can the login screen be bypassed? If so, I'm sure it's something really simple that I'm missing and I apologize, but as I said, I'm brand new the setting up a mac.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)
