Q: Kernel Panics & System Lockup

Hello,

Hoping that someone will be able to shed some light on what may be wrong with my Macbook Pro as apple has never been able to address it and I have been unable to find anything wrong.

I am having issues with Kernel Panics that occur very randomly, however they do seem to occur more often when playing audio.

I am running a i5 17" Mid 2010 Macbook Pro with El Capitan 10.11.1

Issue is not related to updating, I have tried to resolve by keeping up to date since lion and it has never worked.

My other problem is that the display will randomly lock up. Windows will randomly clip and my screen will tile/shift things around randomly. Sometimes this can be fixed right away by moving something, other times is takes a bit to come back, sometimes it is locked up and i can still move my mouse, and other times its just completely locked up (but everything seems to still be working fine, music keeps playing etc). This issue is completely random there is nothing that seems to bring on the problem and it is impossible to reproduce for anyone when I want to. I have ran multiple different equations on grapher at the same times and they run fine without causing any issue

I also have a windows partition that runs perfectly fine. I do however have an issue that sometimes the display will freeze up and go black for a moment when playing games. (I also get issues where the screen will get speckles everywhere and i can only fix by putting the computer to sleep/restarting). After these blackouts often i will get a bubble on the task bar stating that the display driver stopped responding.

I don't know if the two issues are related

Guessing that there may be something physically wrong with the graphics card however hardware test cannot detect any issue.

Thanks in advance.

Have you gone through these steps:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553

Run an Apple Hardware Test using the disk that came with your MBP with the AHT instructions written on it.  Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

These software items are possible suspects.  Delete them and see if the panics stop.  If so, add them singly to identify the 'problem child'.

Other then reseating/putting in the original ram and installing on an external drive I think I have tried everything else.

I Had a hardware test ran at a Genius Bar, is the one with the disc any different?

I'll go ahead and remove daemon tools. Not sure how to remove those virtual tools.

I feel like pace is behind it. It's out of date and I remember trying to remove it in the past without any luck.

Yes, the one on the disk will be different and in all probability inferior to the one at the genius bar.  I suggest that you run it anyway.

Try Spotlight to locate the items in question.  If no success, download EasyFind which often is superior to Spotlight locating items.

Some of your lock up descriptions - seem to equal issues I have had the last couple months with my mac pro running snow leopard -- the apple notes recommended changing the lithium battery - so I did - still had problems until (as I shutdown when not in use) selecting the startup drive (only one) after the startup chime by holding down the option key.

When I checked some of the logs I did see a loop of kernel panics until I started picking the startup drive.

Note: the startup and freeze issues happened both before and after changing that battery - don't know if something got lost in a shuffle - may at some point just try startup.

    Went ahead and updated again.

Used tinker tool to find the hidden library for the vitual files and removed them.

Downloaded the newest version of PACE  to unistall it, done.

    Removed daemon tools.

Havent restarted since but no kernel panics yet.

    as per the start up.

I've had the issue before I did this but...

I had boot camp installed with Yosemite. I ejected a external drive with a partition, it asked if I wanted to eject all, i said yes... It ejected my boot camp partition as well for some reason, could not remount it no matter what I did.

Went to reonstall it... Couldn't. Somehow yosemite changed my boot from a EFI system. So I had to reinstall a EFI system. Updating to el capitan messed up the efI (it is suppose to boot into the efi launcher every boot) but a simple pram reset worked to resolve that.

I dont think the lockup/display tiling is related to the startup.

How did you see that there was a kernel panic loop?

Under my utilities menu - Console - there are a set of Kernel logs -- generally seeing the same message multiple time to fill the screen - during the time I started up - means the system is stuck trying to find something that isn't there.

I tried all the different startups available including verbose (command V after chime) and no errors - but still stuck - selecting the startup disk seems to be a means to an end.   You should be able to find all shortcuts for starting up in your on-line or on mac help (I printed mine out)

With your drive issue you may have to Shutdown down completely = power up should then see the external drives.

Getting this message constantly in console. It's obviously from changing display brightness, but seems rather strange to constantly be showing up.

    Same here.

Sometimes my MBP does not want to get out of his black screen. Without anything going on it is working full out, getting hot. If I manage to get to the login screen then I see the SPOD (beachball). If I manage to log in then Activity Monitor is going berserk, with different processes jumping around like crazy.

Looking at Console I see multiples of
