Q: Do updates slow my device down?

IS it a myth that continued software updates to my iPhone or iPad will slow the device down? Shouldn't I do all available software updates ?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2

Update is when you stay in the same version of software: for example you have iOS8.1 and update to iOS8.2.

Upgrade is when you change into a later version of software, for example you are on iOS8.1 and then upgrade to iOS9.0.

With updates the device should not slow down.

With upgrade you have to make certain that the device is compatible for that new version. Normally it does not slow down but it is possible, for example when the requirements for the new software are higher (eg Ram) than you have.
