Q: Apple Mobile Device Service failed to start when downloading iTunes

Hello everyone.

Today for Christmas I received an Apple iPhone 6S. While setting it up, I tried to connect it to iTunes only to discover I needed to update my iTunes. Due to some issues with the updating process I opted to simply uninstall iTunes, and reinstall it again.

Whenever I try to reinstall it, I receive an error at the end that states "Apple Mobile Device Service failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." I have tried everything I could find online to fix this. I've completely uninstalled some Apple programs ( iTunes, Bonjour, and Apple Device Services are the ones that guide told me to uninstall), restarted Apple Mobile Device Service using the services tab, and ran the iTunes installation as an administrator. None of these have helped.

As it is, iTunes is NOT installed on my computer at all, but these Apple program are:

  • Apple Application Support (32 bit)
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (reinstalled when rerunning iTunes reinstall)
  • Bonjour (reinstalled when rerunning iTunes install)

I am also running on the Windows 7 OS.

Thank you so much for any help you can provide!

iPhone 6s, Windows 7

    Hi kcotes,

I understand that you are having issues with installing iTunes on your PC. You have tried uninstalling iTunes and other software but still having issues with Apple Mobile Device Service. Let's go over what you can do to fix that.

Start with taking a look at the troubleshooting outlined below. It will walk you through moving a .dll file to your desktop and then repairing the Apple Mobile Device Service. If that works, then you can completely remove iTunes and then try the installation again.

    1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32
    2. Locate the msvcr100.dll file.
Make sure that the file name is exactly msvcr100.dll. If you’re unable to locate msvcr100.dll, do not continue with these steps and do not move other files from this folder.
    3. Drag the msvcr100.dll to the desktop. When prompted, click Continue.
    4. After you drag the file to the desktop, try performing a repair on both installed versions of Apple Application Support (64 and 32-bit) in the Control Panel (iTunes requires both versions of Apple Application Support):

      • Click Apple Application Support 32-bit to select it.
      •
      • Right-click Apple Application Support 32-bit to open the shortcut menu.
      •
      • Select ‘Repair’ and complete the Repair Wizard.
      •
      • Perform the same steps for Apple Application Support 64-bit.
    5. Try to launch iTunes.
    6. If there's still an issue, download a new copy of the iTunes installer.
    7. Completely remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components from your computer. Then, reinstall iTunes.
    8. If you still see the messages, restart your computer and try to launch iTunes again. If iTunes launches correctly, place the msvcr100.dll in the Recycle Bin and then empty the Recycle Bin.

If there's still an issue, contact Apple Support for more help.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
