Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Same here in Montreal. I went to the Genius Bar, no problem, free repair within a couple of days under the "quality program"

They managed to fix mine the same day but they told me it would take up to 14 so I went home only to get a call to say it was ready.  shame, if they had told me it could have been done straight away I would have waited but I was still pleased to get it back so quickly.  All free too.

I have the same issue on my iMac which is also out of warranty.  I have an appointment scheduled at the Leawood store for Wednesday.  I hope I have the same luck you did!

I just went to an Apple Store in Altamonte Springs, FL yesterday, they told me there is no "quality program" for this problem, and that I will have to pay something around $120 to fix my stand. I'm going to try another apple store.

Same thing just happened to my 27-inch late 2013 iMac. No AppleCare, so I'll try my luck with Apple as soon as I find a time I can be without it for a few days.

Same problem. Late 2013 iMac stand gave out today. It's no longer under warranty and not covered by Applecare, so I've jammed it at an acceptable angle. I thought Apple was a quality-based company especially considering the price you pay for their products. I'm not too pleased to find so many people with the same issue. This must be a design fault and as such Apple should stand up, accept responsibility and repair for free.

Oh quit your whining and being a poor victim, take the machine in to an Apple Store and ask for the repair then just get on with it!

I'm a brand new (yesterday) Italian member of the ******* club, with another 27 late 2013, and really can't believe there's not an exchange/repair program for that!

I already started collecting all the pictures with all the "solutions" found (mine is a little ball for dogs...) and I can guarantee Apple that - as journalst and social media expert - I'll do my best for the deserved... "promotion" worldwide!!! :-(

Thanks for chiming in and it ***** that it happened but I am not sure about your claim that there is no repair program. Many of us here have indeed had a free, out-of-warranty repair performed that includes an improved part that should prevent a recurrence. If you have been denied a repair, perhaps refer them to this thread because there is plenty of evidence that there is indeed a quality program in place for this issue. Good luck!

Thanks Scott but, maybe, the "quality" program here is different... Because I also tried to refer the Italy's customer service to this thread but nothing... Wait and see!!

That would indeed be very disappointing and unfair. I would definitely try to escalate as far as possible. If all else fails, there is always the hail-mary email to Mr. Cook... though only as a last resort.

Update:  My iMac was repaired and returned to me with no hassle or charge whatsoever.  It was a year and a half past warranty with no Apple Care.

    This happened to me twice!!

I can't believe it, we bought two 27" iMac in Feb 2015 together, one the hinge broke 2 months before the warrant is over and the second one few months after the warranty,  apple care said there will be a charge since it's out of factory warranty.  What's going on?  This thing is expensive, why can they be better quality?  People who fixed this issue for free, would you please tell us how you done it?  I been on the phone with apple care for hrs already.  This is what I used to keep my monitor up, but it's sad since it's only a little bit over a year and it's a beautiful designed....too bad everyone have to think of a way to keep it up.  Shame on you APPLE!!!

I have the same problem on both of the iMac I got at the same time.

I live in Los Angeles, called Apple Care, they told that they noticed this problem with the 27" iMac due to the weight of the monitor so they offer to fix it for me for free.  I got this iMac late 2013 and it's ridiculous that both of the iMac that I bought have the same problems just few months apart.  If they don't fix it for me for free, it would have cost me around $70 to get it fix.
