Q: When will the update be available that fixes the glitches with iMovie and OS X El Capitan?

When will the update be available that fixes the glitches with iMovie and OS X El Capitan?  It does not show the pictures that I've included in projects and seems to skip intermittently throughout my projects.

iMac (intel-based), Mac OS X (10.6.3)

"GeeD; you say you have found no limitations on El Capitan and iMovie 10.1. Have you tried the high pixel photos on several computers?"

I have just dragged and dropped a 4912 x 2760 jpeg photo into iMovie 10.1 running under OS 10.11.2 on my MacBook Pro 2007 (3,1) with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video card with 128MB VRAM and it displays fine both in event pane and timeline.  I shared a short movie containing this still and it is fine.

The laptop has 4 GB RAM and and original HD is replaced by 250 GB SSD.

Needless to say the same photo also imports fine into iMovie 10.1. on my Mac Pro late 2013.

    Geoff.

PS:  Have just tested same resolution jpeg with iMovie 10.1 on my 2010 Mac Mini running OS 10.11.2 - displays fine.

Further to my previous post it seems that the file size of stills is more important than the number of pixels.   Using my MacBook Pro I can drag and drop a 33MB 7930 x 4320 pixel .png file into iMovie OK.  It takes some seconds but then displays fine in event and timeline and plays smoothly with KenBurns effect.  The shared movie is OK.

A 46.2 MB .tiff drawing with resolution 4000 x 2883 shows up OK as a thumbnail in the event and timeline but shows black in the viewer and after sharing.  On my Mac Pro it displays fine in the viewer.

I think its to do with the amount of VRAM available compared to the amount of VRAM needed by iMovie to process the image.

Interesting. I can import a photo in .png format at 6400 size = 36 MB but not a .jpg of the same photo. I can also import a .psd file at 3000 size = 56 MB. But any other format at 3300 and above just does not work. And it takes several seconds for the photo to attempt to render before showing black. So I agree that it is probably something to do with the graphic processing of photos.

My graphic is NVIDIA GeForce 9400M - 250MB

I reduced the size of the .tiff drawing to about 3 MB by converting it to a .jpg and expected this to work on my MacBook Pro but to my surprise it didn't.  I conclude that the .jpg has to be expanded by iMovie.  Even so the pixel count is below that of the .jpgs from my camera (SONY NEX5N) which always work OK.

On the basis of available VRAM your mac should do better than my MacBook Pro - but I guess it would also depend on what other display demands there are on the graphics processor.

Amanda4973 has been told by Apple that a fix is in the works. See: still photos imported to imovie 10 change to solid green

Her stills go green rather than black but Apple again recommended reducing pixel count.  Seems like El Capitan is more demanding on the graphics card than Yosemite.   http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/os-x-10-11/ indicates that low-level graphics code has been changed in El Capitan.
