Q: ipod classic recognised by my laptop but not itunes after latest software update

HELP I'm going bonkers.

I did the recent softare update on my ipad ,iphone and iTunes/laptop and when I tried to update my ipod classic it told me I needed to restore it and now iTunes does not recognise it as a connected device (ran diagnostics) even though my laptop recognises it as a connected device. Ive been trying different things for three weeks. ITunes wont open if it is connected and if itunes is open it doesn't recognise it. Any suggestions?? TIA

iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), Windows XP

What antivirus software do you have, if any? Norton in particular may block communications.

Is the iPod service running? Check using WinLogoKey+R then type in services.msc[enter].

Cheers for that. Just checked and the ipod service is running (manual). I'll run through the Norton settings again but pretty sure that's not the problem either.

It says Windows XP in your profile info at bottom of post.  I don't think the latest iTunes supports Windows XP ("Windows 7 or later" according to iTunes download page); was your update to "iTunes/laptop" for both Windows and iTunes, at the same time?

I would try a few things to rule out possible causes.  First, shut down (power off) your computer and disconnect all USB devices including any hubs (you can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected, if used).  Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port.  This test for problem with USB port (such as lack of power on USB bus), and possible interference between connected USB devices.

If there is no change regarding the problem, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode

Then, connect it to your computer (still by itself) with iTunes running.  If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery."  If it's OK to do a Restore (which erases your iPod), tell iTunes to proceed.

Temporarily disable Norton AV and reboot. Will the classic connect to iTunes now?

I have Windows 7 sorry, not XP. Will try via disk mode though - thanks. Haven't had time but will give it a crack tonight.
