Q: Swaping my hard drive to another MacBook Pro

Hi Folks

I got another MacBook pro of my friend, as he upgraded. he Had sold his hard drive to someone. so it came without a HDD. However this was good for me as I upgraded my other MacBook to 1TB/SSD.

I was then left with my old 500GB Yosemite HDD. The question is do I have to wipe this drive/erase, to mac extended journal, before I can install? I have got backups on my external hard drive of this one as well.

I have done this before with my mac mini, but I cant remember, got a mind like a sieve

Any tips will be very helpful.

Regards

Cap

Install the HDD and see what happens.  You will not damage the MBP by doing so.

    Ciao.

    Hi there mate, thanks

I am stuck with this problem now. Disc will not unmounts, no matter what I try. my disk is fine, so I don't need to repair it, I checked that just encase. I have tried to zero th3e disk from terminal, says the same cant unmounts, and cant unmount it from restore utility. I wanted to boot it up normal, but only got half way then just stay like that. I think I have not got enough ram in this one, only 4GB, and I remembered that Logic pro X was on my disk, with all the gear, everything. This is why I wanted to Erase it, so as I could use from an earlier backup that didn't have all that. it is loaded with an earlier version of Yosemite to what's on Disk as well. How Do I erase this disk??

    Any help would be appreciated

RAM is not your problem.  Boot into the recovery partition and then from the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.  Then Erase the disk if so want to.

    Ciao.

Hi thanks again for your help.

Tried that, but disc wont unmounts, cant erase it, I cant even do it in the terminal, by using all the sudo codes, tried them all. I am starting to think ii might be that the OS are the same, but different. they are both called Yosemite 10.10, well one is 10.10 already on there and the other is the same on my disk. Or wait is that the one on my disk when i go to recovery osx boot? Tried that, it looks like it is going for it, then says there is a problem. I need to erase this disk somehow. I haven't got a docking station, and i am not too sure about swapping it in my other mac to format it. Encase it messes that up.

I havce noticed quite allot of problems on here Disc wont unmounts, cant find many solutions though??

Thanks anyway mate, if you got any other tips let me know.

What is the EXACT model/year of the MBP that you got from your friend?

    Ciao.

13" late 211 its showing all the signs of working apart something is blowing me from erasing the drive. I think it is pointing to something else instead of my main drive, and substituting it, i need to delete something, Not sure what though, and how to look for it?

I suspect the hard drive is trying to mount to its original hardware configuration. By analogy, you have dropped a VW engine in to a Ford Pinto and expect it to just run.

At this point, I would suggest to erase the hard drive (externally), create a Yosemite install CD, plug in the reformatted hard drive, and install Yosemite fresh.

    Hi Jim

Yep thats what i was staring to think as well, unless i got rid of the alieses, but i am not sure if i will be able to get to them, and  where they are?,  so as i can wipe them, and just leave the main macbook HD.

Hoever i got a external HD dock coming today  so do i just stick it in my other mac, and delete? I got a windows pc, but i am not sure if i can erase it on mac extended journal on there?

    Regards

You cannot format a Mac hard drive on a Windows PC (the inverse is however possible).

Put the hard drive in the external dock and use Disk Utility to format it.

Does anybody know if I can delete aliases files that are blocking me from erasing my hard drive? I cant really get into much as I am in recovery mode. I can use my terminal, and OSX utilities, that's about it for now until I can unmounts this disk. I am getting a external dock to do it, but I have to wait 2 days on that somebody said if I get rid of the aliases files that are the same as the main one, it will work. However I have not got a clue how to get rid of these when I only have limited space to work with?

It seems the best bet at this point is one of these options ...

    * Ask that same somebody to explain not only what to do but how to do it

    * Find a bootable Yosemite DVD and try the reformat + reinstall from it

    * Wait on the external enclosure and reformat + reinstall at that time
