Q: Broadcast Safe filter in FCP X isn't broadcast safe

Hi,

I produce content that needs to be QC'd and I have had a few files from FCP X fail QC due to RGB Gamut errors. On further investigation it appears that the FCP X legaliser corrects luminance errors but still lets RGB errors through. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Try applying the effect twice, once to reduce luma, and once to reduce sat.

Thanks. Nice idea but I just tried it but still doesn't help.

Works for me if I use sat first. How far out of spec is this media?

You'll get a little bit better rolloff with the saturation first. Can't tell from the parade and not the scope, but looking at the image, I can't see how the saturation is out of spec.

    Try this variation:

    fcpxtemplates.com/fxexchange/BroadcastSafeSL.zip

and let me know what you think about it. It uses a different approach to broadcast safe by using Levels and Saturation/Value. When you apply it to a clip, it may "clip" the signal to the limits... not generally what you want. You can move the values to move the signal levels within the bounds (and that includes > 1 for White and < 0 for Black... Balance as well.) The Value control will adjust the Brightness. The Value and Saturation controls will not affect the overall Black and White Points.

Also, use the Option key and drag on the values to make "fine" adjustments.  All values can be keyframed if necessary.

This effect is just a general application of effects and can be driven to extremes for some unusual effects not related to "broadcast safe" (for example: high contrast B&W).

It should be applied after any color corrections.

    Fox_m,

That seems to have done it. Thanks very much for posting. I will use it on my next project and let you know if any issues come back.

In terms of the grading workflow, I grade my entire timeline clip by clip using the Color Board keeping the blacks and whites within the limits then create a compound clip of the whole timeline and drop the legaliser over the top.

Apart from the issues I had recently, it seems to work well.

    Thanks again,
