Q: Remote App and Apple TV 4

My Apple TV 4 is conneted via ethernet to my network, when I try to set up the Remote app the AppleTV does not find a "Pairable Device" i.e. the iPad/iPhone that is connected to the same network but via WiFi..... all software is the latest versions on all devices, Home Sharing is turned on on all devices, I've logged out and in to home sharing and the iTunes store several times, I've rebooted everything at least three times if not more, re-installed the Remote app on the iPad/iPhone... after all this the AppleTV still cannot find any pairable devices (progress indicator just keeps spinning....)

I'm guessing that the AppleTV and the iPad/iPhone must all be connetced to the network via WiFi??

If anyone has some insight to this problem it woudl be greatly apprciated.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

I think you may be confusing pairing with he remote app.  You won't actually "pair" the phone and the Apple TV via the remote app.  You enable homeshare via iTunes, keep your iTunes computer connected and sign into home share on the remote app and the app connects via wifi to control the library/device Over wifi but not via Bluetooth pair...

    Thanks for your response;

In the Knowledge Base link (Set up Remote for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support) which I had read before posting my question "Pariable Devices" is the term used by Apple (shown in the screen shot below.) When following these instructions where "John's iPhone" is shown below, none of my devices show up, in fact nothing shows up at all..... This appears to indicate that the Apple TV cannont see/detect the devices with the Remote App that are connected to the networks WiFi, and that have Home Shareing enabled. The Apple TV is able to access all the shared content in iTunes on my computer using the Seri Remote....

Gotcha!  Just wanted to make sure we weren't talking about Bluetooth pairing.

with home sharing enabled on all 3 devices, and all 3 connected to the same wifi, you open the remote app on the phone, open the remote app setting on the ATV and no passcode appears on the TV to enter on the phone And you don't see your phone listed as pair-able?

Maybe a stupid question but have you confirmed that the same Apple ID was used for homeshare on all 3 devices?  Sometimes I mix up my itunes and iCloud...

have you tried restarting the computer, phone and ATV?

Once the connection is established, it will no longer show as pair-able....

home sharing enabled on all 3 devices
Yes - Home Sharing is enabled on all devices.

all 3 connected to the same wifi

No - Apple TV is connected via ethernet to my network

the computer is connected via ethernet to my network

the i devices are connected via WiFi to my network

This was what made me think that even though all devices are connetced to the same network, the Apple TV and computer are connected via ethernet whereas the i devices are connected via WiFi and this might be the reason why the Apply TV cannot see/detect the i devices.

you open the remote app on the phone, open the remote app setting on the ATV and no passcode appears on the TV to enter on the phone And you don't see your phone listed as pair-able

Exactly - the Remote App is open, the Apple TV Remote App settings are open; no passcodes appear on the TV and no i devices are listed under "Parable  Devices"

same Apple ID was used for homeshare on all 3 devices

Yes - all devices are using the same account for Home Sharing

have you tried restarting the computer, phone and ATV

Yes - all devices have been restarted a number of times

Interesting.  I have my ATV4 connected via ethernet so I don't see that as the root cause.  What about delete/reinstall the app on your phone? Assuming with all the resets that your router/modem was also reset?

have you checked firewall Settings on your computer? What kind of computer houses your iTunes?

On your Mac, make sure that the firewall isn’t set to "Allow only essential services." You don't need to edit the port addresses.

On Windows, allow iTunes to communicate through the firewall.

If you use other firewall software or hardware, check its user guide for how to open TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353.
