I understand that your MacBook Air is not using your Sony TV as an external display. Let's see if we can get that sorted out.
Because you have already tested the cables, I would move on to changing the display resolution on your MacBook Air. You may need too restart in Safe Mode for this to pop up. Take a look at the troubleshooting outlined below to get this working for you.

Jan 2, 2016 10:07 PM in response to norm123by Snow Golem,Hi norm123,
Thank you for the kind response.
I've tried out the said changes in the display resolution but it still shows 'no signal'. I've tried resetting the NVRAM as well as the SMC as advised, but the TV still does not recognise the macbook. On the TV there is a function that allows me to select devices, however it is unable to detect the macbook. Is it possible that Sony TVs are not compatible with MacBooks?
Thanks,
Snow Golem

I don't think that is the case as on the MacBook you do have the option to detect displays if it is not plugged in. Look over the additional troubleshooting if you have not done so already and if you are unable to use the TV, contact Apple Support for additional support.
