Q: I can't delete files on my time capsule

After hitting the delete key - the window that says "deleting x items"  just stays there forever and files are not ever deleted.

Any suggestions?

I have experienced similar issues with permissions on El Capo.

But I do find it hard to reproduce.

Do a test.. can you copy a file to the directory?? Can you then delete that file?

This is important as the answer to this will tell you what is happening.

It is also important to note that all files change permissions when you copy them to the TC.. you do not own the TC.. it is owned by the firmware of the TC itself.. that is why it is important to create your own directories before copying files to it.

I think we are on to something.

I can copy a file to the TC root - but it won't let me copy a file to the folder with the files I want to delete.

I can delete the file that I send to the root.

Yes, which proves it is a permissions issue..

You do not have permissions for the directory that was created from another computer. Create your own directory and you will then have permissions to copy files to it and delete files from it.

It is remarkably hard to keep up with how Apple is changing this stuff.. as from Mountain Lion (which is my regular OS) it is much less of a problem.

Yes, which proves it is a permissions issue.

Which was my original thought, but I was confused when slackyhacky mentioned that everyone did have access to the files.

    Time Capsule issue?.....or.....operating system issue?

TC has not changed. I cannot see that any differences in folders is going to be result of the firmware.

This is an OS issue.. 90% sure.

It is indeed hard to reproduce though.

I did test it.. When I create a folder on the TC from ML or from El Capo I can open files on both..

I can also delete files.. so I do not have the same issue as the OP.

However I don't have a setup where I can use two computers running El Capo.. or not yet.. working on it.

I guess another question to the OP.. do you have current user with full admin rights on the computer??
