Jan 1, 2016 8:01 AM in response to fundaes1by a brody,Front Row basically disappeared under Lion, basically rendering the infrared capability useless, as that was the only application Apple had with that capability. However, people have succeeded in bringing it back under Lion and Mountain Lion, and this tip may work for El Capitan or not:
Front Row is possible under Lion and Mountain Lion
There are other Infrared receiver software combination packages including

Jan 1, 2016 9:09 PM in response to fundaes1by Lanny,Mid 2009 MacBooks and MacBook Airs are the last models with infrared.
The non-Retina 13" MacBook Pro Mid 2012 is still being sold as new and is the last MacBook Pro with Infrared.

Are you sure about that? I seem to remember it working with DVD Player, Keynote, and iTunes.

Jan 2, 2016 9:16 AM in response to Lannyby a brody,My bad, you are right, I know that it worked with iTunes. Not sure about Keynote since I never had that installed. The article about turning on the infrared reception on and off should be helpful.

Jan 3, 2016 5:14 AM in response to fundaes1by fundaes1,Thanks for above info. Re infra red. It is turned on in computer as it shows its volume control working I can see that on the screen. What it fails to do now is when remote menu button is pressed another screen would come up with iTunes playlist. You would choose a playlist and from here you could could scroll thru playlist up or down, choose a song, play it and could also start and stop song from remote, as a musical act this was professional. Now I have nothing, audience had no idea what band mate was doing preparing next song to play from list while I spoke and segwayed to next song.
Can one remove El Capitan download?.. Only downloaded this as new iPhone 6 would not pair with MacBook and iTunes as it was out of date. Had to update iTunes for new phone, couldn't get new iTunes without El Capitan. Yikes. What has apple done? So disappointed.
can you install another remote control system onto MacBook?

Jan 5, 2016 11:25 AM in response to Lannyby fundaes1,Would anyone know how to retrieve this front row that was removed or rendered useless with the download of El Capitan. Just spent 2 hours at the Mac store ( have to drive 45 minutes to closest store, to find out that yes, Mac Genius says it can be done, but he can't do it as Apple doesn't want it done. If he did it and something happened to my computer they would worry I could come back to them.
Honestly, El Capitan did this. This computer is used for my living. If anyone can help me figure out how to bring the front row back...I would appreciate it.
Thanks kindly! Remote still works with the powerpoint presentations. It's only the iTunes page that will not come up.

Jan 6, 2016 6:46 PM in response to fundaes1by a brody,iTunes 12.2.25 with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion may work too. I know it works with iOS 9.1, but I have not tried with iOS 9.2.
You can't downgrade an iOS, but you can downgrade a Mac OS X, if you haven't made any changes to your system that upgrade it beyond compatibility with the older Mac OS X. See this tip:

Jan 7, 2016 5:01 AM in response to a brodyby fundaes1,Thank you for these tips. I will look into downgrading. I believe downgrading makes the mac and new iPhone 6 incompatible. Hence the reason I upgraded to El Capitan Better to have mac book working than have compatibility with iPhone and MacBook. Lesser of 2 evils. Wonder if Apple ever considers the effects these changes do to existing programs. Or if they even care. Apple store staff pleasant but really not helpful in the way of solutions.

Jan 7, 2016 6:31 AM in response to fundaes1by Eau Rouge,Before you go ahead and downgrade and lose synching with your iPhone, you could partition your drive and have two OS's on it.
One for Lion and your infra red capability, and one with El Capitan for synching with your iPhone.
Of course you will need to have a large enough internal to accommodate two systems and all the data you need to function, but might be worth investigating.
you simply boot between the two whenever you need to use the particular function.
