Q: Brand new macbook pro 13" low battery remaining when fully charged

Hi. Just received a brand new 13" retina macbook pro. Battery percentage drops very quickly and only says 5 hours 50 mins remaining when fully charged (%100). Is this normal? It seems far lower than the the specs stated at apple.com. Do I need to take it in to apple store?

Thanks.

I would get it replaced at the Apple Store.

Thanks very much for your quick replies. I'll try resetting the SMC and if that doesn't help, I'll take it back to Apple store.

You have 14 days after purchase to return an Apple product to the store for any reason. Maybe save yourself a trip to the store.

About Mac notebook batteries - Apple Support

    TL;DR summary:

Battery "life" depends heavily on how the computer is being used at the moment.

8 to 10 hours of battery life is an optimal range, not an absolute guarantee.

The battery 'gauge' is an estimate, based on use at the moment.

Estimated charge and time remaining changes as your use of the computer resources changes.

All these things significantly affect battery life: Many programs opened and still running, many browser tabs and windows open, streaming endless hours of video, intensive game play, wifi on when not needed, bluetooth on when not needed, full screen brightness when not needed, full keyboard backlighting when not needed, running Windows in a virtual machine environment...

Examine what , About this Mac, System Report, Power, Battery Information shows about the battery Charge Information (particularly Charge Remaining and Full Charge Capacity), and Health Information - Condition. Is it showing 'Normal' ?

Make note of the numbers now and then give the battery couple of charge/discharge cycles (a day or two of your "normal" use) and then compare again.
