Q: iMac suddenly drop to half performance after 2months - Geekbench

Hi Folks

My iMac suddenly drop to half performance and i can't spot the reason why. I have lately installed SSD drive in my iMacLate09 and the performance was very good for long time. Then all of a sudden the performance is half. I have trim enabled from the start, half the SSD drive is free 168gb free out of total 250gb. My system is a copy of my iMac11 and i see no performance drop on iMac11 that i spend 10times more time on that the iMac09.

As I understand it, Geekbench 3 measures processor and RAM memory performance, not disk input/output.

    http://support.primatelabs.com/kb/geekbench/interpreting-geekbench-3-scores

Adding or removing an SSD should have little or no effect on either of those numbers.

Seems to me that the i7 processor itself or perhaps defective RAM or memory controller chip is now limiting performance. A high-temperature or temperature-sensor induced limitation, perhaps because of a clogged or broken fan or an unplugged sensor when the SSD was installed? High-performance processors do have a lower-performance mode to protect themselves when high internal temperatures are detected.

Looking at the Geekbench3 benchmark trends posted for all i7 2009 iMacs, you'll see that at least two 2.66Ghz and two 2.80Ghz i7's (I assume one of these is your results) are operating at significantly decreased performance.

    Screen Shot 2016-01-01 at 3.29.34 PM.png

EDIT: Did you run the benchmark after using the system for an extended period of time doing processor-intensive tasks? Maybe try re-running it right as you start up from a system that's been off for a few hours and is at room temperature.

OK, i had some damage on the internal monitor port on logis-board so I run the iMac via external display port. it might have fried other parts as well. Hmmm. I have run the test 10 times newly restart as well.  Though the old high score test from September is also via external display port monitor and damaged logic board so I assume it has not influence. Maybe is the fan speed software that limits the CPUs  power, I'll try to set full speed fan and see it it make a difference, currently it's automatic fan control.

I just tested with full fan speed and it did not help. I have 2x4gb and 2x2gb 12gb ram so i don't think the ram is a problem..

Can i test the cpu or logicboard somehow?

I checked further into the processor specs, and I was mistaken, and I apologize.

Checking the legacy Intel datasheet for the i7-860, your 'desktop' i7 processor DOES NOT have thermal monitoring technologies: http://ark.intel.com/products/41316/Intel-Core-i7-860-Processor-8M-Cache-2_80-GH z

It is 'mobile' i7 processors of that generation that contain thermal monitoring capability: http://ark.intel.com/products/49666/Intel-Core-i7-640M-Processor-4M-Cache-2_80-G Hz

So you verified that the most recent index numbers are repeatable, that the fan(s) work, and the processor temperature generated during the benchmark is not going up dramatically. It is interesting that the CPU fan speed did not increase during the test.

Still, something appears to be limiting your system memory and processor performance that was not present when you ran those same performance benchmarks in September 2015, and from your data sheets, the September run was on the same OS X release, so it's not some change within OS X.

Have you noticed an actual decrease in system performance, or only in the numbers generated by the benchmark?

I doubt it is the problem, but just in case, try swapping one of the 4GB sticks with one of the 2GB sticks so they are paired 4+4 and 2+2 instead of the 4+2 and 4+2 you currently have.

Also, have a look with Activity Monitor while Geek Bench is running and try to figure out whether any of the memory it is using is 'compressed'.

You have got so many third-party extensions and other applications running on your machine that Geek Bench is only getting a 490/800 share of the CPU. Also, Geek Bench is running as 32-bit executable, which may also create overhead.

You're also running 10.10.4 and one of the things that has been improved in subsequent OS releases is 'performance'.

    C.

As for your RAM, is it installed to match horizontally? If so, that is the correct way for that model (the configuration did not change until 2012 or so). For some reason, Apple's report on installed RAM has always been confusing - what matters is that there are 2 horizontally matching modules in the top row (such as 2 x 2 GB) and two matching in the bottom row (2 x 4 GB). You can also put the two 4 GB modules at the top - that does not matter.

Still bad less than 50% performance ? To be honest i don't think it's a software issue the give 50% drop, also after clean install.

Anyone know what it can be?

I did notice my system was not as snappy a usually i thought it was weird so i did i bench mark to see if it was just me.. Then i realised it was 50% drop in benchmark score, so might be a damaged chip or something like that? But does that system even startup if hardware is damaged?

You mean i should buy i new ssd? It's an evo 850 should be very reliable ssd. I have two in rail in my iMac11 for a year now with no problems. I just wiped it and w/r speed are fine. What should change on my iMac09 with a new ssd?

As I wrote the Samsung 850 EVO has a poor reputation among Mac users, so eliminating it as a contributing factor would require replacing it with a device that doesn't.

Replace that Mac's original hard disk drive, another hard disk drive, or a SSD known to work with Macs. The only SSDs I have used and can recommend are sold by OWC / MacSales. I am not aware of a single problem with them, whereas complaints of poor performance from Samsung 850 EVO SSDs are commonly reported on this site. Performance degradation may not appear for a long time after they have been placed in service.

OK, i just tested my old HD drive where i have a OS X 10.8.5 installed i got similar score is i get now on my SSD with 10.10.4. https://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/4772976

I thought the big deal with these sad's was to enable the trim and then it should work fine? Hmmmm. Can i safe erase the ssd write 0's to all blocks or is there another way to regain life in the ssd? Very confusing to target in on what that actual issues with that disk is since, it shows 250mb/s r/w transfer speeds.. When i have not enabled trim on my other evo850 the drop to 50mb/s r/w which makes sense since garbage is not cleaned, but then i formatted and enabled trim from start with no issues..

Is there a third level of problems beyond trim? and is it solvable?

    Cheers and thanks for reply's
