On December 16, 2015, the Topsy service was shut down, and its website was redirected to an Apple support page discussing the search functionality of iOS 9.

I hope Google doesn't do the same thing with Google Voice (that was once a startup called "Grand Central").
Google voice features are being consolidated into google hangouts - that's been in the news and discussed around the Internet for about 15 months now.

I don't recall any other company "cold-cocking" a service as Apple did with topsy.

So where do you think Google gets the money from since nearly all their products are free?

Clearly you were not a user of QuickOffice Pro when Google bought them and then promptly gutted the app to force users onto Google Docs.

But I go back to my original question. How can a legitimate company abruptly shutdown a service with no alternative? I grant you, Apple is a big company, and this is probably more an example of ignorance vs evil.

You can start by looking at the google graveyard. There have been hundreds of services that just vanished off the face of the planet in the last 20 years.
As for "do no evil"... hardly. Do you know how google makes their money. By selling you. You are not Google's customer, you are their product. Same goes for Facebook, Yahoo, twitter, instagram, pinterest... the list goes on and on.
