I feel your pain. I'm both happy and sad to report that I don't share your particular issue. My own issue is weird enough.

LIke you said though, bring it on. Its way past time to accept that Mail in IOS9&+ is shall I put it... far less than perfect. Maybe its time to cut losses and give us back Mail from 8.4. Just saying.

    Enjoy the holidays.

Hello, wondering if you've received further input from Apple, whether you're any closer to a resolution and whether you were given a new device as replacement.

This thread seems to have lost its momentum.

I just hope that apple don't think the issues with their mail app are resolved as they so clearly aren't.

They probably think that the issue is resolved because many people in this thread have reported that it is resolved. And the lack of activity most likely means that it really has been resolved for all (or most) of the people who follow this thread. 9.2 certainly resolved it for me.

9.2. hasn't resolved anything. It just stopped deleting already downlowded e-mails. At least something... 9.xx Mail still crashes when you delete more than 3 to 4 old mails mail-by-mail, it doesn't download content unless you skip to a mail beore or after etc. and  so on and on and on... Apple Mail 9.xx is garbage and unreliable. BASTA.

FIRST, the subject of this thread is

After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

As you just said, that problem is resolved. If you have different issues you should start a new thread with those issues as the subject, not bury them 64 pages into an unrelated thread.

As to the other issues you describe, my phone does not exhibit either of them. So maybe, just maybe, there's something wrong with your phone, rather than with the version.

As I wrote: "... it doesn't download content unless you skip to a mail before or after etc." ( = not downloeded from server...). Get it? Verstanden? I am from Europe and expect decent service.

Sorry to hear that you are still having issues with the mail app.  I too have not experienced any mail problems since installing iOS9.2 and I don't expect that all those who posted to this thread are still having those same issues and went silent.  Starting a new thread for your particular issue  might be worth considering. Good luck.

I get that you have a problem. I don't have the same problem. Others who have posted don't have the problem you have.

iOS email does not download attachments until you open the email. That has been the way it has worked since the first iPhone. It's also the way many other email clients work. However, my emails without attachments appear fully formed when I open them.

Well, iOS 8.4 worked fine. iOS 9.xx is still extremely buggy. It takes ages to load mails (deleting a series of e-mails regularily leads to a system crash), and mails don't appear when you click on them (iPad mini 1). There are tweaks and work-arounds I have found on the web - but hey,  this used to be Apple and not the dark side! With 9.2 I can now somehow live with this system (since there is no way back to iOS 8.4), but I am fed up with this post-Jobs job. I feel like a bet-tester. Hopefully, 9.4 in 2018 will be fully functional.

I didn't have any problems until I updated to 9.2.  Then I started getting the "message not downloaded from server" problem fairly regularly on my iPad, but only occasionally on my iPhone.  I gave up hoping for a fix - clearly Apple doesn't care to acknowledge the problem, much less fix it.  I'm glad for those of you who no longer have the problem, but the rest of us who still have the problem are in a worse position now, since I'm sure they are no longer even looking at the problem. In any case, I know that I will no longer be paying premium prices for mediocre products from a company that's laughing all the way to the bank.

The fact that you first had these issues after updating to 9.2 indicates that whatever bug is in the mail app is complex.  I doubt that Apple is laughing about this and also cannot imagine it is intentional.  When I had these issues with 9 and 9.I I called Apple Support and thru a senior level tech arranged to send certain log files from my phone to Apple so that engineering could use the data to investigate and diagnose the issues.  You might consider doing likewise as well as starting a new thread specifically relating to these issues in iOS9.2

    Good luck.

you may also wish to post on this alternative thread on the same topic: Problems with mail in iOS 9

Most users have reported that the "not downloaded.." issue was actually cleared up by 9.2. I wonder how many more users still experience the issue after updating?

Have you tried restoring the devices as new?

Could you provide device details and POP or IMAP?

Your sentiment of no longer paying premuim price for mediocre products and service is definately shared.

    @ mariotheplumber......

    EDITED several times for accuracy....

    Hello and as you say...

"Most users have reported that the "not downloaded.." issue was actually cleared up by 9.2. I wonder how many more users still experience the issue after updating?"

apple have obviously addressed some of the issues but they have not cured them completely. In fact they appear to have created others in the process.

Simple use of the mail app does not normally render the "message not been downloaded from the server" under IOS 9.2.

I say normally because sometimes one still sees "message not been downloaded from the server" on a simple mail received to the inbox.

...but if you follow the following procedure you will find that there are still many issues with the code.

By the way I am seeing these issues on both the iPad Air AND an iPhone 6s+.

Both of them are running IOS 9.2 and have bog standard POP email addresses configured on them.

My girlfriend has the same iPad and the iPhone 6+ but is still running IOS 8.4.1 and does not see any of the issues I describe.

She also has standard POP email addresses configured on her devices.

    1) Ensure you have at least one POP email account set up on your device.

    2) Create a new email (Subject: "Test" and body: "This is a test email") and send it to one of the POP email accounts configured on your device.

    3) Check your inbox one minute later and observe the email arrives.

    4) Either left-drag on the email to immediately send it to the trash bin OR click on the email to read it (it displays correctly at this stage) and then hit the trash bin icon to send it to the trash bin.

    5) Select the Trash Bin and observe the email you have just deleted. It should have the correct subject text but what does it display for the email body text? It should read "This is a test email".

Does it read "This message has no content" instead? - ISSUE/BUG!

If it reads "This is a test email" then you aren't seeing the problems that several others including myself are experiencing here.

    Otherwise read on.

    6) Still in the Trash Bin, click on the email.

What does the body text read?

Obviously it should read "This is a test email" but does it instead display "This message has not been downloaded from the server"? - ISSUE/BUG!

    7) Click the folder icon (move email) followed by the sent icon (to move the email to your sent box). I realise that this will rarely be desired but it should still work correctly however.

    8) Select your sent box. If you sent the original email from this device you will see the sent email here but below I am talking about the email you have just moved from the trash bin to the sent box.

Is the email you have just moved from your trash bin sitting in your sent box or has it now completely disappeared from your device (not in your sent box and no longer in your trash bin)? - ISSUE/BUG!

I can demonstrate these issues with 100% success (or should I say apple failure) rate and as I say there is nothing special at all about the device I am testing on.
