Jan 2, 2016 2:12 PM in response to confused grannyby joe_7399,Hello confused granny,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you were trying to update your husband’s iPad 2 and received errors 9 and 39 while using Windows 10 and Windows 8 respectively. I know these situations can be frustrating, but we are here to help!
To continue troubleshooting this situation, I would recommend working through the steps in the first article below.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes - Apple Support
Please note step 3 specifically because the next article also says that error 9 could be related to security software on the computer.
Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support
Check your security software
Errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1611, 9006.
Sometimes security software can stop your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't blocking a connection to the Apple servers.
If you still see the error message, check for USB connection issues.
Cheers!

Because you are receiving alerts on two different computers with two different operating systems, I don't feel like uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes will be helpful in resolving the issue. If you have followed the steps in the previous articles and are still unable to restore your iPhone, the next step may be contacting Apple Support. Contacting AppleCare will allow us to look further into your specific situation and help you to resolve it.
