Jan 2, 2016 2:45 PM in response to Gnotukby vazandrew,The remote app requires both devices be on the same network and home sharing enabled on Apple TV. You would need the physical remote to set that up. If you are unable to borrow one then you will need to purchase a replacement

Jan 2, 2016 3:55 PM in response to Gnotukby Winston Churchill,I understand that the ciderTV app for computers may help you to access your Apple TV to facilitate setting up the remote app on your mobile device. I haven't confirmed this myself, so please let us know how it goes for you.

Jan 2, 2016 5:06 PM in response to Gnotukby Skruttdegen,If you happen to own an Apple Wireless Keyboard, you might be able to use that.
When booting up a new Apple TV for the first time it automatically searches for remotes and keyboards, thus enabling a keyboard-connection without a remote. Is there a way to force "boot search" this without a remote?

Jan 2, 2016 5:18 PM in response to Skruttdegenby Winston Churchill,So far as I was aware that isn't the case.
- The Apple TV 1, 2 and 3 didn't have bluetooth remotes
- The article you link to seems to imply you need to navigate before you can pair a keyboard.
Pair your keyboard with your Apple TV
- Turn on your keyboard and put it in discovery mode.
- On your Apple TV, select Settings > General > Bluetooth. Your Apple TV will search for nearby Bluetooth accessories.
- Select your keyboard.
- If asked, enter the four-digit code, then press Enter or Return.

Jan 2, 2016 5:54 PM in response to Winston Churchillby Skruttdegen,Yes, when connecting a keyboard to an "existing" Apple TV a remote is needed for setup.
However, as stated:
When booting up a new Apple TV for the first time it automatically searches for remotes and keyboards, thus enabling a keyboard-connection without a remote.
I've never used the remote whatsoever with my current Apple TV, since the keyboard paired during the initial boot-sequence.
It's a long shot though, and unless original poster happens to own a compatible keyboard it's probably not worth the hassle.

Jan 2, 2016 7:51 PM in response to Skruttdegenby Winston Churchill,I understand it searches for devices that have already been paired with it, it doesn't just connect to anything it sees.

Jan 15, 2016 12:55 AM in response to Winston Churchillby J_7,If you reset the apple tv it will search for any bluetooth keyboard. Even if it is not paired before.
