Q: Swaping my hard drive to another MacBook Pro

Hi Folks

I got another MacBook pro of my friend, as he upgraded. he Had sold his hard drive to someone. so it came without a HDD. However this was good for me as I upgraded my other MacBook to 1TB/SSD.

I was then left with my old 500GB Yosemite HDD. The question is do I have to wipe this drive/erase, to mac extended journal, before I can install? I have got backups on my external hard drive of this one as well.

I have done this before with my mac mini, but I cant remember, got a mind like a sieve

Any tips will be very helpful.

Regards

    hi mate

Yea that was on another form, I had asked on a few yesterday. Right I have found all the alias files one is called Macintosh HD alias, and the other is mine with the same name, but not alias and with no arrow. Trouble is there is no trash can I can drag it to. I have the option of send to trash, but doesn't work. I am on application through safari there are two HDS the same, one has to go. or I am trying to change name, I have a bootable Yosemite usb I done through diskX maker, but don't have a clue how to use it.

I might just wait till Sat, unless I can get rid of that alias drive, as my disk will supposedly erase after that?

Anyway thanks for your help Dr, anymore tips welcome.

    Hi Dr

I got my external today I wiped it on another mac, got a bootable Yosemite usb done. However bit would not set up OSX when my HDD was in my mac. So I then took hdd back out and tried to set it up external and Bingo it worked got a full working mac. However I cant transfer this hard drive back to my mac, as it only boots half way, I know I have done something wrong. Any ideas?

In the old days, I might have suggested that a hard wire pin was keeping the drive in a slave mode rather than a master mode. But with what you are explaining and in consideration of today's technology, I'm unfortunately out of ideas.

    No Worries mate

I might have to change the hard drive cable, but that's just a guess, its real weird cause I could see what was on the drive the other day, for example managed to spot all of the alias files. Therefore the HD was picking up in recovery, but not booting or behaving.

Ah well I will keep at it, till I suss this. I will let you know if I ever get it going properly. Still can always use it as a desktop model, with the external plugged in.

Anyway mate thanks for your help you have still helped me allot with getting this far.

    All the best

Do you have more than one drive connected to that MBP? Or just the internal drive you swapped from your other MBP. What aliases? Is the drive partitioned in some way?If there is only one drive connected to that MBP, then  the only drive that will show in disk utilities in the recovery mode is that one. You should have the hard drive, plus an indented drive and maybe the BDS system showing in utilities. If the main drive is already GUID. Then use erase to erase the indented drive. Go back to recovery and reinstall. If it will not let you. Then what you may need is the original install disk for that computer or a Snow leopard disk, So you can install the operating system and then update it. Now it would be El Capitan as Yosemite is not a free download anymore.

    hi there

yea its just the one drive i have, it boots ok when in the external docking station, but will not boot from the macbook internal. The drive is ok as i have done a check. The top drive is GUID, then i have one under it which is macintosh hd this is the one i am trying to boot.

and there are a yellow boot disk OS X underneath or something. However i do have snowleapord 10.6.1 install disks two of them. Never used them before someone gave me them brand new.

I did manage to get a free bootable download of Yosemite on to usb, this is what i am running if i plug my dock in, still got it on usb. Oh i think i see what you mean i would have to upgrade through the App Store or something, as i go along?

I looked at my hdd again one i put it in through safari help on recovery page, i can see in applications my macintosh hdd has an arrow on it again, which means there must be aliases. The only way i could delete these would be putting disk back into disk and going into the proper system, as i have no way of trashing them when in computer, Nooptions, plus no trash bin.

    Regards

The 10.6.1 disks has to be machine specific or they will not work. That is to say compatible with that MBP. The usb drive with yosemite is it bootable? The yellow disk you see in utilities is the recovery portion. It should say BDS.  Are you looking at the drive in disk utilities through the recovery  option or in some applicatiions folder?

If you can boot to that drive externally. You can also use recovery with it mounted externally. Which means it can be erased  in the recovery disk utilities and then use recovery to reinstall. I am assuming you have it in an external drive when doing this.

well both, in utilities i think it does have BDS, this is under disk 1, on the bottom part.I am not looking at it right now i am on my other one.  For example, in utilities

at the top you have macintosh hd 50000011?????. these numbers are just an idea, under that you have Macintosh HD.

then there is a botom frame with disk 1, and under that a BDS i think?

Yea i am not sure if these cds will run either, i could try later though. My Yosemite is a bootable usb, done from my other mac, and disk maker X. Works great, as this is the one i got going on the docking station, as it would not work trying to install anything from my internal side, but external was fine, i couldn't even unmount it on the internal, had to  do that on the other, then swap back to the problem maker mac,  to do a external OS X install, then a time machine back up. i done the time machine back up later, as it would not let me do it internal, so had to take it back out and back to the station for to do that.

Any more tips keep them coming i am off for now, will be back on later

    Cheers for now mate

    Kind regards

If the usb stick is bootable, it should have worked. Inserting it into the usb slot on the MBP and booting with the option key down. Clicking on it in the options and continuing on. If your old hard drive that you are now trying to use on that MPB was running Yosemite anyway. You should have been able to just run the reinstall from recovery without erasing anything.Anything that had to be changed or updated to run on a different MBP would have been done.

i tried that mate, didn't work, didn't work through osk either, didn't work with set up in the, restore box where utilities, time machine back up, and help is.that is why i tried it on the external dock. i had no means to delete the aliases at this time, i tried allot of sudo commands that would not work. Had no Trash bin, to drag anything to, there was a right click option said send to trash but didn't work, as i suppose there was no Tras folder at this point. I am thinking would a fire wire to fire wire work? say in target, if i hook up my 2 MBP'S?

I got to go this time will catch you again soon

    Many thanks

Yes. With the firewire cable connected, and your MBP on. Start the target MBP with the T key down and the drive should show on the desktop.

Hi mate Yes did have it in external drive when doing this. So will I erase it externally and then try to restore internally? Not sure if this will work but got to give it a go

I got to wait on fire wire cable get it tomorrow, so in the meantime I plugged my HDD back into my external dock. booted no problem got Yosemite running on this at the mo. Anyway I found an Alias HDD of the macintosh HD, so I bined it, tried to reboot internal, no joy. Then swaped back again to dock to see if I could deleate the macintosh HD, and try and restore it from recovery.

Well its all greyed out when I go into erase, cant do it externaly on this one, although I might be able to on my other MBP.

What files are showing on external are yellow 500.11GB Apple HD DHT********************Media

Then underneath, Macintosh HD, and superdrive. On the bit under the line I have dismakerX4bg.dmg

    Then under that install ESD.dmg

I am totally snookered on what to do next as the disk says cant unmounts when I try it in the main MBP, same behaviour as before????
