Q: something is conflicting with airdrop, How to find out?

I'm with OSX 10.11.2 and iOS9.2.

Here is the thing, My airdrop works fine when send file from iphone to mac, But I was unable to use airdrop from mac to iphone.

Sometime ago, I setup a new account and It started to work properly.

Now it went wrong again. but swithing to a guest account solves the problem.

So, I figured there must be some app or service conflicting with airdrop.

But how to find out which one is conficting with airdrop? There are so many apps.

Do someone have any idea?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Still not working, iPhone is still not discoverable by Mac.

There is another thing I think I should mention,

after I send a file from iPhone to Mac, The icon of iPhone appears in the airdrop for a while when the transfer happens. After that it disappears again.

both my "allow discover" is set to "everyone".

What are you trying to send to the phone, and how are you doing it? Are you sure it works in the guest account at the same time that it doesn't work in your account?

I think the thing I'm sending does not matter. It can be jpg or pdf.

The issue is my iPhone don't show up in the AirDrop window after I click the "AirDrop" in the sidebar:

    b.png

After switching to Guest user and click AirDrop in the finder, iPhone shows up immediately.

I just tried it again to verify. I switch to guest from here:

    a.png

and AirDrop start to work correctly:

( in fact, this screenshot is sent from Mac to iPhone using guest, and send back to Mac in my account ):

This procedure will delete certain temporary and cache files. The files are automatically generated and don't contain any of your data. Occasionally they can become corrupt and cause problems such as yours.

    Please back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    open $TMPDIR..

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. Depending on which web browser you use, you may have to press the return key. A folder with a long, random name should open. Inside it, there should be a subfolder named "C". Drag that to the Trash.

Log out or restart the computer. Empty the Trash. Test.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I cannot get whether if Airdrop worked in safe mode, because I tried 3 times and always get this:

    d.png

But I tried to poke around, It seems not working. What I tried several times is to drag pictures to the estimated area where I think the iPhone device icon should be. But nothing happened.

And here are some console log after clicked Airdrop, seems the same :

    Please back up all data.

    Step 1

Open the Library folder in your home folder by holding down the option key and selecting

              Go Library

    from the Finder menu bar.

Some of the files or folders listed below may not exist on your system.

From the Library folder, move the following folder to the Trash, then relaunch the Finder and empty the Trash:

              Caches/com.apple.finder

Test. If there's no improvement, continue.

    Step 2

Move each of these files to the Desktop:

              Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist

              Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

              Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist

              Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

              Saved Application State/com.apple.finder.savedState

              SyncedPreferences/com.apple.finder.plist

              WebKit/com.apple.finder

Log out or restart the computer and test. If there's no change, put each file you moved in this step back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place, and log out again. Otherwise, delete the files you moved.

Removing these files did not help.

But I tried something else, and it worked.

    This is what I did:

    1. move all the files in

    ~/Library/Preferences/ to  ~/Desktop/some_folder/

    2. logout and login.

-------------------------------------- at this time the Airdrop started work again.

    3. put files back.

    4. logout and login.

-------------------------------------- at this time, Airdrop still working.

I don't know what's going on. But Airdrop is back.

This action had a little side effect though:

My settings for a app called "betterTouchTool" is gone missing. but not very important.

I have the same problem for a long time now and finally find the time to analyze the root-cause.

I have to admit, that I'm quite skeptical about the replies of the other user here. All replies of this user are the same copy/paste-content, which are very general, quite blind without a clear reference to anything like a root-cause. Could even be a bot responding.

So I compared processes between my real user, where AirDrop doesn't work and a newly created user, where it works. I didn't find any interesting differences there, so I think the problem lies somewhere in a configuration. The hint with the preferences-folder is very interesting. That's what I'll have a look at next.
